TNM Super League Preview: Bullets v Songwe

This Sunday afternoon we host Songwe Border United at Kamuzu Stadium for our third TNM Super League match of the season.

It’s been a demanding stretch for The People’s Team, who are gearing up for a third fixture in just a week. Following a goalless draw with Creck Sporting Club in the Airtel Top 8 Cup quarterfinal first leg, Mponda’s side responded in perfect fashion by sweeping aside the same opponents 4-1 in last Wednesday’s Super League encounter.

With momentum on our side, Maule are eager to claim a third straight victory and maintain our unbeaten start to the new season.

On the other hand, the newcomers have found life in the top flight challenging, enduring back-to-back defeats in their opening matches and will be looking to change their fortunes against a home side famed for rarely dropping points.

Songwe, making just their second road trip, will be intent on pulling off an upset and getting their season up and running.

FORM GUIDE

After securing wins over defending champions Silver Strikers and fellow Lilongwe club Creck Sporting, Mponda’s men have kicked off the campaign in style—marking their strongest league start since 2022.

Currently leading the table with six points, The People’s Team has scored five goals while conceding only once.

The 17-time Malawi champions will look to harness the home crowd as we aim for another emphatic, high-scoring performance to cement our place at the summit of the league standings.

Morale is high within Mponda’s camp after last week’s 4-1 triumph over Creck, as the squad looks to send a clear message to their rivals in the title race.

Across all competitions, Bullets have registered two clean sheets and five goals in three outings. Concerns about the backline, following the departure of several defenders before the start of the season, have been allayed by recent displays of resolve and composure at the back, boosting squad confidence in the new campaign.

In contrast, Songwe Border United’s maiden Super League term has started with difficulty. After a narrow 1-0 home loss to Moyale Barracks, they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Blue Eagles in Lilongwe.

Despite an encouraging pre-season—finishing third in the Northern Region Super 5 Bonanza—Songwe is still searching for their first goal and first points of the season, having conceded five without reply.

Nevertheless, they will be expected to approach Sunday’s clash with Bullets determined to reverse their fortunes and ignite their campaign with a positive performance.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

This game presents the first-ever encounter between the two teams, coming after the upper Northern Region side’s recent promotion to Malawi’s top football division.

TEAMS NEWS

Chrispin Mapemba and Peter Banda remain unavailable as they continue recuperating from long-term injuries, while captain Clyde Senanji is recovering from a hamstring issue.

Goalkeeper Clever Mkungula is also on the sidelines after sustaining a cut in training, and Chikumbutso Henderson—yet to debut for Bullets—will miss out through illness.

Mponda will have to continue naming his matchday squad without left back Dominic Musonda, as the Zambian, who signed for The People’s Team last month, is still completing the paperwork for his work permit in Malawi.
