Preview: Bullets target winning end to Northern trip at Karonga

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets now turn their focus to bottom-placed Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium on Wednesday, aiming to close their two-week Northern Region tour on a high and keep the pressure on rivals Mighty Wanderers in the TNM Super League title race.

After a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Chitipa United at Chitipa Stadium last Saturday, Peter Mponda’s men want another important win to wrap up their northern assignment before heading into the international break.

FORM GUIDE

Mponda’s charges have had mixed results across their last five games in all competitions. The People’s Team collected six points from away wins against Mzuzu City Hammers and Mafco FC but then surrendered a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium in their final first-round fixture.

They bounced back in style with a 5-0 demolition of Chilumba Barracks in the FDH Bank Cup Round of 32 before overcoming Chitipa United 2-0 last weekend to start the second round strongly.

Bullets currently sit second in the standings with 37 points from 16 matches, one point behind Mighty Wanderers.

For Songwe, the campaign has been brutal. The league newcomers are winless after 16 games, recording 14 defeats and two draws. They have scored just five goals while conceding 43, and their recent run has seen them lose 5-0 to Civo, 4-0 to Chitipa United, 3-1 to both Mafco and Kamuzu Barracks, and 1-0 to KB in the reverse fixture. In the FDH Bank Cup, they were eliminated by Blue Eagles, 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in normal time.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

This will be only the second meeting between the two sides. In the first round, Bullets delivered a statement 7-0 victory in Blantyre – Songwe’s heaviest defeat in their debut season.

TEAM NEWS

Bullets have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the match. Defenders Blessings Mpokera and Andrew Jovinala, who missed the Chilumba tie due to fitness issues, returned to the starting XI against Chitipa and are available again.

Striker Babatunde Adepoju, who scored four goals and provided an assist against Chilumba before coming off the bench to net a late penalty against Chitipa, remains the team’s biggest attacking threat. The only absentee is Chrispin Mapemba, still recovering from a long-term injury.
