FCB Nyasa Big Bullets open the 2026/27 season with a Blantyre derby against Mighty Wanderers in the NBS Bank Charity Shield at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The match will be the first meeting between the two sides since The People’s Team suffered three defeats to their rivals in all competitions last season, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest in Lilongwe.
Bullets, however, head into the curtain-raiser with a flawless record in the competition, having won all seven editions they have featured in since its introduction in 2016.
Maule will now be targeting an eighth Charity Shield title as they look to make an early statement in the new campaign.
FORM GUIDE
The People’s Team return to competitive action following a structured pre-season programme that has seen the squad build rhythm and cohesion ahead of the new season.
The technical panel has used the period to integrate new signings and fine-tune key areas, with encouraging performances in the closing fixtures.
Saturday now offers the first opportunity to turn that preparation into silverware.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be the fourth Charity Shield meeting between Bullets and Wanderers.
The People’s Team have won all three previous encounters in the competition, recording victories in 2016, 2019 and 2023.
Those results underline Bullets’ edge in this fixture in the Charity Shield, although the derby remains a contest decided on execution on the day.
THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER
Seven Charity Shield titles have been won by The People’s Team, all from seven appearances in the competition.
Across nine matches played, Bullets remain unbeaten, scoring 15 goals and conceding just four.
Three of those victories have come against Mighty Wanderers in the Charity Shield, while Chiukepo Msowoya stands as the club’s top scorer in the competition with five goals.
TEAM NEWS
The People’s Team are expected to have a strong squad available for selection ahead of the season opener, with only a couple of injury concerns within the camp.
Wingbacks Aaron Chilipa and Chrispin Mapemba are both sidelined as they continue their respective recoveries.
Chilipa has been part of the squad throughout pre-season preparations but did not feature in all four matches as he continues to build towards full match fitness.
Mapemba, meanwhile, underwent knee surgery in Tanzania on Tuesday after sustaining an injury last season. The procedure was successful, and he has now begun his recovery process.
Their absence is likely to prompt adjustments in the wide areas, with the technical panel expected to rely on available options within the squad to maintain balance on both flanks.
Elsewhere, the squad is in good condition heading into the derby, with the coaches having a full complement of options across the pitch.
Saturday’s fixture could also provide the first competitive minutes for several of the club’s new signings, adding further intrigue to team selection as The People’s Team prepare to open the campaign.
Wanderers, meanwhile, have no injury concerns ahead of the match, according to coach Macdonald Mtetemera, who confirmed his side’s full availability during a press conference in Lilongwe on Friday.
TACTICAL FOCUS
The Charity Shield often comes with its own demands, with both sides balancing early-season sharpness and the desire to lift the first silverware on offer.
For Bullets, control in midfield and efficiency in the final third will be key in what is expected to be a tightly contested derby.
Defensive discipline will also be crucial, with The People’s Team conceding just four goals across nine matches in the competition.
Set-piece efficiency could also play a decisive role in what is expected to be a tight contest.
KEY BATTLE
The midfield contest could prove decisive in Saturday’s derby, with both sides expected to look for control and rhythm in the centre of the pitch.
For Bullets, dictating tempo and winning second balls will be key to establishing authority, while also providing the platform for attacking transitions.
Whichever side gains the upper hand in midfield is likely to control the flow of the game and tilt the balance in their favour.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
The first silverware of the season, a chance to set the tone, and an early statement in the Blantyre derby are all on the line.
For Bullets, Saturday is about more than extending a perfect Charity Shield record — it is an opportunity to respond and start the campaign with intent and authority.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Head coach Gilbert Chirwa believes the team is well prepared heading into the new campaign after a productive pre-season period.
“I’ve worked on quite a number of things. At the beginning, we strengthened the team. We brought in some new players, seven of them.
“Plus, the players that we had last season, we’ve come up with a very good team. We know for sure.
“As you are aware, they beat us three times last year, but that doesn’t mean that it will be the same this year.
“This is a different year. It’s a new year. Our approach is very positive and I think all the players are motivated and they are looking forward to doing well.”
