Head coach Wedson Nyirenda says healthy competition within the FCB Nyasa Big Bullets squad is helping accelerate the team’s progress, with players pushing each other to improve every day.
Growing competition for places is helping drive FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ recent progress, according to head coach Wedson Nyirenda.
Since taking charge last month, Nyirenda has overseen encouraging progress both on the training ground and on the pitch. While recent results have reflected that improvement, the Bullets coach believes one of the biggest changes has been the intensity with which players are competing for opportunities.
During his Thursday pre-match press conference, Nyirenda said healthy competition has created an environment where every player understands that selection must be earned.
“I can now see real competition within the squad,” he said. “If you come to training, you will see how hard the players are fighting for places. Every player wants to show that he deserves to play.”
For Nyirenda, the benefits of that competition extend well beyond team selection. It is also helping reshape the team’s mentality.
Reflecting on his first days at the club, the Bullets coach admitted he initially felt too many players were choosing the safer option instead of expressing themselves in possession.
“When I first arrived, I saw a very different team. It worried me because almost every player wanted to turn backwards instead of looking forward. Now you can see everyone trying to play on the front foot. The team is becoming more positive, more aggressive and more attack-minded, and that is exactly what we want.”
The Bullets head coach believes maintaining that mentality will be just as important as improving the team’s technical and tactical qualities, with competition continuing to push players to raise their individual performances.
He also made it clear that no player is guaranteed a place in his side, insisting that opportunities would continue to be determined by commitment, performance and the demands of each match, adding: “Nobody has a permanent place.”
For Nyirenda, sustaining that internal competition will be essential if Bullets are to continue progressing throughout the season.
With every player aware that selection must be earned, Nyirenda believes the squad has created the environment needed to continue improving as The People’s Team pursue success across all competitions.
