The head coach discussed the playing surface, Bullets’ finishing and the possibility of strengthening the squad following Sunday’s goalless draw with Luanar Mitundu.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda reflected on the difficult conditions, missed opportunities and a point gained from Sunday’s FDH Bank Premiership encounter at Dedza Stadium.
Bullets recorded a third successive clean sheet but could not find the breakthrough, leaving Dedza with a point from the final away fixture of the first round.
Nyirenda felt the playing surface prevented his side from establishing their usual rhythm and implementing the game plan prepared for the match.
“It’s tough. This is not a pitch to play football on. It’s tough for us, but our friends were enjoying the game.
“It’s very surprising that we can be playing top-level football on this kind of a pitch.
“But let’s not bury our heads in the sand, we have gained a point, but this is not a pitch for us to play our usual game,” he said.
The head coach said the surface made it difficult for Bullets to impose their preferred style, but his focus quickly turned to the next fixture.
“We can’t have any game plan here. You know what I am talking about. This is not a playable pitch.
“It’s a no for me, but we move on to the next one,” he added.
While acknowledging the difficulty of the surface, Nyirenda again highlighted the need for greater consistency in front of goal, an area he has regularly addressed during his opening months in charge.
“This is the biggest problem. We do not have a clinical finisher. Today we finish, tomorrow we miss.
“We need players who are very consistent with finishing those chances because we are playing well and creating opportunities, but we are misfiring,” he explained.
With the transfer window open, Nyirenda suggested Bullets could look to strengthen the squad as he seeks greater cutting edge during the second round.
“We cannot rule that out. This is what we need and we will definitely make some changes to the team so that we can have a better second round of the league,” he said.
The draw moved Bullets to 27 points from 14 matches, leaving us fourth, one point behind third-placed Blue Eagles and two adrift of leaders Silver Strikers and second-placed Mighty Wanderers.
Bullets now turn their attention to the visit of Silver Strikers, a fixture that will bring the first round of the FDH Bank Premiership to a close.
