Kaonga joins Bullets on three-year deal

Nyasa Big Bullets is delighted to confirm the arrival of Eric Kaonga from Ekwendeni Hammers. The defender has signed a three-year contract.

The 25-year-old left-back is Kalisto Pasuwa’s second signing in the just-closed local transfer window, after central midfielder Paul Kansungwi completed a move from Red Lions last week.

Kaonga joined Ekwendeni Hammers at the start of this season from Mlatho Mponela and was given the armband at the Mzimba-based side that lost 2-0 to Bullets at the weekend. He was voted Man of the Match in the TNM Super League encounter played at Kamuzu Stadium.

He said after finalizing his move: “It is an unbelievable feeling and an honor to call myself a Nyasa Big Bullets player, which is something I know that only a small number of players have the privilege to say.

“I can’t wait to get going and integrated into the team. It was always my wish to one day play for this team and it’s a big achievement in my career and I am looking forward to giving it all for my team.”

Kaonga arrives after Pasuwa and Malawi’s first-choice left-back, Precious Sambani, sustained a knee injury during Saturday’s match and could likely miss the rest of the season, a condition which meant Bullets had remained with only one left-footed defender, Yamikani Fodya.

Said Pasuwa about the player, who he has been tracking for some time: “We welcome him into our family and hope for the best for him. I hope he will enjoy football. At Bullets we’ve got a free play where anyone can do what he thinks he’s good on. I am very positive that he will adapt quickly to our system.

“It’s good that we are having depth in our defence as you aware that we have been having so many injuries in our back four. We have John Lanjesi who is struggling, we have Sankhani Mkandawire who we have been rotating and we just lost Sambani to a long-term injury leaving us with only Fodya.”

Kaonga, who has been called into the Malawi national team camp preparing for a friendly match against Tanzania away next week, joined Bullets training on Wednesday morning and is expected to join the Flames on Sunday after The People’s Team’s league clash against Mighty Tigers.
