Babatunde: Winning the derby will be a big step forward

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju believes that a victory over Mighty Wanderers in Saturday’s Blantyre derby would give the team a significant boost in momentum.

The Nigerian striker highlighted the significance of the upcoming match after our impressive season opener—boasting six victories, 20 goals scored, just one conceded, and a flawless tally of 18 points.

“A win here would be a big step forward, building on the positive start we’ve made this season,” Baba told club media.

“The coach encourages us to approach each game with focus and take things one match at a time. We aim to keep evolving with every performance. We just want to maintain our progress and see where it leads us when the final whistle blows.”

Baba, who has had a hand in seven goals across eight matches in all competitions this season, spoke openly about the derby’s importance.

“The Blantyre derby is the biggest fixture in the country, and the buzz around it is always massive. This game can define a player’s career—it all comes down to how strong you are mentally. While it’s played over 90 minutes like any other, the intensity and atmosphere set it apart.”

Having netted nine times in nine derby appearances against his former club, Baba reflected on what it means to beat the blue side of Blantyre—a team he once represented for before joining Bullets in 2021.

“These derbies are a big source of inspiration for me,” he said. “I don’t need extra motivation for games like this because I know what they mean. Matches like these can really enhance a player’s reputation. I’m always ready to step up when the moment comes.”
