FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to Bingu National Stadium on Sunday to face a Masters FC side established in the top five during their debut FDH Bank Premiership campaign.
Peter Mponda’s side sit fifth with 26 points from 18 matches, offering another test of our winning start to the second round.
Ahead of the 15:00 kick-off, we assess the challenge from a side with several familiar faces as The People’s Team pursue a fourth successive league win.
Recent History
Our first top-flight meeting with Masters was decided by Ephraim Kondowe’s penalty at Mpira Stadium in June.
The forward converted in the 54th minute to secure a 1-0 victory after Richard Chimbamba had produced several saves against his former club.
The result lifted Bullets to third in the standings and maintained Wedson Nyirenda’s unbeaten start as head coach.
Sunday offers an opportunity to complete a league double, with Masters seeking a response on home soil.
Current Form
Masters have recorded seven wins, five draws and six defeats from their 18 matches, scoring 20 goals and conceding 17.
Mponda’s side are unbeaten in their last two outings, following a 4-1 home victory over Karonga United with a goalless draw at Chitipa United.
That response came after a 1-0 defeat away to Dedza Dynamos in their opening second-round fixture, leaving them with four points from three matches since the restart.
They have also kept two clean sheets in their last four league games, shutting out Red Lions before the break and Chitipa last weekend.
Masters began their debut campaign with three successive victories over Chitipa, Karonga and LUANAR Mitundu. Sustaining that early momentum has proved more difficult, although their latest home performance underlined the attacking threat they carry.
They now welcome a Bullets side who have taken maximum points from three matches since the restart, scoring six goals without reply.
Style of Play
Mponda’s preference for passing football is reflected in a side that looks to build through midfield and create openings through movement around the ball.
Mike Mkwate and Rafick Namwera offer options in possession, helping Masters connect their play and bring their attacking players into the game.
The hosts are willing to commit numbers forward and can accelerate their attacks once space opens. Their recent performance against Karonga showed how effective those combinations can be.
That approach presents a test of concentration and organisation for Bullets, particularly when Masters find room to receive between the lines.
Their attacking ambition can also leave space when possession changes hands. How effectively they protect those areas and recover their defensive shape will be an important part of Sunday’s contest.
Key Players
Hastings Ndau
Ndau leads Masters’ scoring chart with three league goals and provides pace and movement in attack.
His runs can stretch a defensive line and offer an outlet when Masters move forward quickly. He is also prepared to attack defenders directly, making him a threat when given space to build momentum.
Although his scoring return has slowed after a promising start, his movement remains an important part of the hosts’ attacking play.
Richard Chimbamba
Chimbamba’s display in the first meeting offered a reminder of the quality we know well.
The former Bullets goalkeeper made several important saves at Mpira, keeping Masters in the contest before Kondowe beat him from the penalty spot.
His command of the area and confidence under aerial deliveries bring experience to the hosts’ defence. Bullets will need composure and precision when opportunities arrive.
Patrick Phiri
Phiri’s close control allows him to work in tight spaces and create room for a shot under pressure.
The former Bullets forward can change direction quickly, take on defenders and threaten from outside the penalty area.
His ability to produce an opening with little room gives Masters another option against an organised defence.
The familiar faces extend throughout the squad. Hassan Kajoke, Mike Mkwate, Henry Chiwaya, Khumbo Banda and Austin Chirambo joined during the midseason window, adding to a group that includes Precious Sambani, Richard Chimbamba, Miracle Gabeya and Innocent Msowoya.
Mponda and goalkeeper coach Victor Mphande provide further connections to The People’s Team from the technical area.
Familiar faces will be on both sides at Bingu, but Bullets’ focus will be on securing another three points and maintaining our winning start to the second round.
