Gumbo receives late Malawi call-up for Angola qualifier

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder Chawanangwa Gumbo has received a late call-up to the Malawi Flames squad ahead of the second TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027 qualifier against Angola.

Gumbo returns to the national-team setup after featuring for Malawi at the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana in March, where he came off the bench in the third-place playoff against the hosts.

Flames head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has added the midfielder to his squad following Malawi’s 2–1 victory over South Sudan in their opening Group B fixture at Bingu National Stadium on 25 September.

Ephraim Kondowe and Yankho Singo both featured from the bench in the win, while club captain Blessings Mpokera was an unused substitute. Oscar Petro was not included in the matchday squad.

Malawi sit second in Group B on three points, behind leaders Egypt, who moved to four points after a 5–0 victory over South Sudan on Tuesday. Angola are third on one point, with South Sudan bottom without a point.

The Flames will travel to Angola for the second qualifier on Tuesday, 6 October 2026.

Gumbo’s addition brings the number of Bullets players in the current Malawi setup to five, alongside Mpokera, Kondowe, Singo and Petro.
