The first Blantyre derby in the 2020/21 TNM Super League campaign, which was slated for this weekend at the Kamuzu Stadium, has been postponed.

Super League of Malawi (SULOM) announced the postponement of the clash on Wednesday following a Covid-19 outbreak at Bullets, with ten squad members and one official testing positive.

The People’s Team suspended training on Tuesday to prevent further spread of the virus among the squad members.

Bullets had earlier written SULOM to consider shifting the Blantyre derby due to the outbreak, which has among others affected goalkeepers Ernest Kakhobwe and Richard Chimbamba, thereby leaving The People’s Team with only one ‘keeper Clever Mkungula, as Rabson Chiyenda is also out with a fractured finger.

“SULOM wishes to inform the general public and all stakeholders that due to unforeseen circumstances, the match Be Forward Wanderers versus Nyasa Big Bullets scheduled for 02/01/2021 at Kamuzu Stadium has been rescheduled to a later date to be communicated,” SULOM announced Wednesday evening.

“Based on strong medical advice the League has received, in consultation with both clubs, [we] have decided to postpone the fixture as 28% of the registered team members of Bullets are in isolation due to Covid-19 which includes two of their goalkeepers who join another goalkeeper on the injury list (total three goalkeepers either sick or injured),” added the League governing body.

The postponement means Bullets will have to wait for their sixth league fixture in this campaign, having played five games and registering two wins, two draws and a loss, collecting eight points and currently on position six on the standings.

The team is expected to resume training on Monday, 4 January, after undergoing another round of testing.
