Nyasa Big Bullets’ Chimwemwe Idana and Gomezgani Chirwa have finally joined the Malawi squad for the Cameroun 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations after testing negative for Covid-19.
The duo flew to Cameroun on Tuesday to join the rest of the team after missing the trip to Saudi Arabia where Flames were camping ahead of the AFCON, which kicks off on Sunday, January 9.
Flames interim head coach, Marian Mario Marinica, picked three Bullets players namely Ernest Kakhobwe, Idana and Chirwa into his final 23-man squad.
Sankhani Mkandawire, who was in the initial 30-member provisional squad but could not travel after testing positive for Covid, was however released as Marinica was picking his final team for the delayed 2021 AFCON month-long event.
Other Bullets players, who were on reserve, namely Clever Mkungula, Nickson Nyasulu, Blessings Mpokera, Alick Lungu, Misheck Seleman and Hassan Kajoke, were also released from local camp last week.
The Flames left Saudi Arabia for Cameroun on Wednesday and will kick-off their Group B campaign against Guinea on January 10, before facing Zimbabwe four days later and Senegal on January 18.
The 2021 AFCON event was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
