Preview: Bullets vs Civil Service United

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to Mpira Stadium on Saturday when we welcome Civil Service United for our latest FDH Bank Premiership assignment.

Wedson Nyirenda’s men lead the standings with 36 points from 17 matches, one ahead of Mighty Wanderers, following successive victories since the restart.

Civil arrive in 11th place with 21 points, looking for their first victory since the midseason break after following defeat to Karonga United with a draw against Dedza Dynamos.

Recent meetings have rarely been straightforward. After sharing four goals at Civo Stadium in the first round, Bullets will be looking to find the decisive edge on home turf.

FORM GUIDE

Bullets head into Saturday unbeaten in six league matches, with five victories and a draw during that sequence.

Wins over Chitipa United and Karonga United were followed by a goalless draw against Luanar Mitundu before a 5-0 victory over Silver Strikers brought the first round to a close.

Nyirenda’s men resumed with a 2-0 win over Blue Eagles at Mpira Stadium, courtesy of second-half goals from Chawanangwa Gumbo and Ephraim Kondowe.

Clever Kalambo then opened the scoring against MAFCO before substitute Tinaye Tsimba struck twice late on to secure a 3-0 victory at Civo Stadium.

Those results have taken Bullets to ten wins, six draws and one defeat, with 25 goals scored and seven conceded.

Civil’s record stands at six victories, three draws and eight defeats from the same number of matches. They have scored 11 goals and conceded 16.

Abbas Makawa’s side won three successive games before the break, beating Blue Eagles, MAFCO and Kamuzu Barracks.

They have collected one point since the restart, losing 1-0 to Karonga before drawing 1-1 against Dedza last weekend.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Bullets have enjoyed the stronger record over the past decade, although the most recent meetings underline how competitive this fixture has become.

The first-round encounter ended 2-2 at Civo Stadium, where Khumbo Mhone scored for Civil and earned the Player of the Match award.

Last season, the Servants won 2-1 in Lilongwe before Bullets responded with a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Kamuzu Stadium.

Both fixtures in 2024 ended level, with a 1-1 draw at Kamuzu followed by a 2-2 result away.

In 2023, we came from behind to draw 1-1 at Civo before overturning a two-goal half-time deficit to win the reverse fixture 3-2.

THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER

Bullets are seeking a third successive victory in the second round and a fourth consecutive league win overall.

Our last three league matches have produced ten goals without reply, while the run of successive clean sheets now stands at six.

Civil’s results have largely been decided by narrow margins. Five of their six league victories have finished 1-0, as have six of their eight defeats.

The last three league encounters between the teams have produced 14 goals.

TEAM NEWS

Blessings Mpokera faces a late fitness test after experiencing knee discomfort, with the medical team set to determine his availability.

Chrispin Mapemba continues his recovery. Nyirenda says the left-back is close to returning but still feels some pain.

Tsimba is pushing for his first start following his two-goal contribution in Lilongwe, while Peter Banda remains in contention after missing the MAFCO encounter.

The contributions of Tsimba, George Chaomba and Paul Master have given Nyirenda greater flexibility, with the head coach welcoming the growing competition for places.

COACH’S THOUGHTS

Nyirenda has emphasised the importance of treating Saturday as a fresh contest rather than allowing previous meetings to dictate expectations.

“People can say that last year this happened, or the other year that happened, but I always say every game is a new game,” he said.

The head coach also wants Bullets to keep their attention on the task in front of them as the title race develops.

“We need to be consistent. We do not need to look back. We look forward, and every game counts.

“Our focus should be on our own games. Let us concentrate on Civil, get the three points and move on.”

OPPOSITION FOCUS

Civil captain and former Bullets midfielder Righteous Banda remains central to the visitors’ play.

His distribution helps the Servants vary the tempo and switch attacks, while his delivery from set pieces provides another threat.

Khumbo Mhone offers pace and direct running from wide areas, with Frank Chizuze adding experience to their attacking options.

Saulos Moyo leads Civil’s scoring with two league goals this campaign, while goalkeeper Rahaman John provides another familiar connection following his time with Bullets Reserves.

TACTICAL FOCUS

Civil favour a passing game, using combinations through midfield to bring their wide players into the contest.

They are prepared to press high, and Mpira Stadium’s artificial surface should suit their quick movement of the ball.

For Bullets, the challenge will be to play through that pressure while staying compact when possession changes hands.

Civil’s willingness to commit players forward can leave space behind their midfield. Accurate passing and well-timed runs will be important if Nyirenda’s men are to turn those openings into chances.

The head coach has made clear that his priority remains imposing our own approach.

“We want to act and the other team to react to us,” he said.

KEY BATTLE

The contest in central midfield could determine how much freedom either team finds further forward.

Banda will look to give Civil control in possession and release runners into attacking areas. Bullets will need to restrict that service while moving the ball with enough purpose to stretch the visitors’ defensive shape.

Maintaining the right distances between midfield and defence will also be important, allowing Bullets to press without leaving space for Civil to exploit.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Victory would take Bullets to 39 points and open a four-point lead over Mighty Wanderers, who travel to face Karonga United on Sunday.

Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Ekhaya leaves Blue Eagles on 34 points from 18 matches, giving Nyirenda’s men an opportunity to strengthen our position at the summit.

Civil, meanwhile, are seeking their first victory since the restart after taking one point from their opening two second-round fixtures.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Gift Chicco will referee the encounter, assisted by Sibusiso Sibande and Limbani Mussa as First and Second Assistant Referee respectively.
