Player of the Match Blessings Mpokera hailed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ fighting spirit after Sunday’s thrilling 2–1 comeback victory over Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium — a result that sealed a league double over the defending champions.
After a goalless first half, the visitors took the lead in the 67th minute through Andrew Joseph’s deflected strike, before halftime substitutes Ephraim Kondowe and Hassan Kajoke turned the game around with goals in the 72nd and 81st minutes, earning Peter Mponda’s men a hard-fought win in the TNM Super League.
A Tough Battle Against Quality Opposition
Speaking after the final whistle, Mpokera said the match demanded full concentration from both sides.
“It was a tough game. If you look at both teams, the intensity was high; every player played at their best, and being voted Player of the Match is not something small — it’s a great feeling,” said Mpokera.
The defender, who delivered a commanding performance in the heart of the Bullets lineup, earned his fourth Super League of Malawi Player of the Match award of the campaign.
Containing Silver’s Early Pressure
Mpokera also reflected on how Bullets managed to withstand Silver’s early dominance, suggesting that mindset made the difference.
“I think the way they approached the opening minutes of the game, they underestimated us, judging by our performances in several previous matches. Also, considering they are just coming from the CAF Champions League, they had all the confidence that they’d beat us. That mentality, I believe, is what contributed to their loss today.”
Title Race Still Open
With the victory lifting Bullets closer to the top, Mpokera maintained a grounded outlook on the title race.
“I can’t say we’ve won or lost the title yet; championships are decided on the final day. But winning games in the second round definitely boosts our chances.”
Looking Ahead to the Blantyre Derby
After collecting six points over Silver Strikers this season, Mpokera underlined the importance of the upcoming clash with rivals Mighty Wanderers in the reverse fixture.
“Beating Wanderers would get us closer to the conversation about the title, but for now, we’re focused on winning every game that comes our way.”
Fighting Spirit and Leadership
The defender, who captained the side in the final half after vice-captain Babatunde Adepoju was substituted at halftime and with skipper Frank Willard on the bench, rallied his teammates after going behind and led by example in defence.
“When we conceded the goal, we had some guys looking down, but as the captain on the field, it was my responsibility to lift them and bring out the team’s fighting spirit. Bullets don’t give up until the final whistle.”
On Wearing the Armband
Asked if captaining the team adds pressure, especially in big games, he smiled and said:
“The armband is not heavy. When you have confidence, the armband is not heavy.”
