Chirwa: There’s hunger to do well on Saturday

Gomegzani Chirwa believes FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are brimming with confidence ahead of Saturday afternoon’s crucial match against rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the TNM Super League.

This will be the third meeting between the two Blantyre giants this season, following our meetings in the first round of the Super League campaign and the FDH Bank Cup Round of 16.

The spoils were shared in the first clash in May when we drew 1-1, and Bullets triumphed 2-1 in the second encounter.

Heading into the 77th Blantyre derby, Maule are well aware that they haven’t defeated their cross-town rivals in a league match since 2022.

“We’ve had several league derbies that ended in draws, but this time, we’re more motivated to succeed and improve our position. There is hunger at training to do well on Saturday,” the Bullets captain told club media.

Currently, Bullets are trailing league leaders Silver Strikers by 13 points with just eight games remaining, a situation that feels unfamiliar for the Malawi champions. Chirwa emphasised the need for players to exert extra effort in this fixture.

“This game is our chance to make amends. A win will keep our hopes of reclaiming the championship alive. We’re eager to win; it will be tough, but as defending champions, we need to showcase our strength,” he added.

Despite the slim odds of defending the championship, the captain reaffirmed that the fight rages on, making this derby crucial for The People’s Team.

“This is a derby. The excitement is immense, and the stadium will be packed with supporters. It’s not just about points; it’s about city pride. It’s a pressure-filled game, but we will give our all to achieve the desired result this time,” he concluded.

In the first round, Issac Kaliati opened the scoring for the Nomads before our former talisman Patrick Mwaungulu equalised to salvage a point for Kalisto Pasuwa’s men.
