FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda believes Peter Banda can become a big asset.
The 25-year-old has gradually been building his match fitness since returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, and his recent performances have provided encouraging signs of his progress.
After impressing off the bench in Bullets’ 2-0 FDH Bank Premiership victory over Creck Sporting Club, Banda followed it up by scoring a stunning direct free-kick equaliser after coming on as a substitute against Ekhaya FC in last Saturday’s Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal second leg.
Banda underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder in January 2025 before returning to action later that year, with the club carefully managing his reintegration into the team.
Speaking during Thursday’s pre-match press conference, Nyirenda, who took charge of Bullets in June, said Banda’s encouraging displays reflect the careful approach taken to his return following the injury lay-off.
“Peter had a long layoff after an injury and only recently returned to training. Now that he has had the feel of a full competitive match, I think he is looking good and ready to play his game.”
Banda has featured five times for Bullets in all competitions this season, making three starts and two substitute appearances as the technical panel continues to carefully manage his workload.
The midfielder has already established himself on the international stage, earning 23 senior caps for Malawi. Yet Nyirenda believes one of the country’s most naturally gifted footballers is still some way from reaching his full potential.
“Peter is one of the most skilful and technically gifted players in Malawi. We are working with him on one or two things that I have observed, which I cannot discuss publicly. Once we have worked on those areas, I think Peter will become a very big asset for the national team.”
Nyirenda’s confidence reflects not only Banda’s recent impact but also the belief within the club that the 25-year-old still has his best football ahead of him.
With Bullets now turning their attention to the FDH Bank Premiership and the Castel Challenge Cup, Banda will be hoping to build on his recent performances and continue the steady progress that has earned the backing of his head coach.
