The head coach discusses growing competition for places and the flexibility to adapt a winning side.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda says the impact of players coming off the bench is giving him greater options as the league campaign progresses.
Bullets have won both matches since the FDH Bank Premiership resumed, with substitutes helping to shape those victories.
The latest contribution came from Tinaye Tsimba, who scored twice after replacing Clever Kalambo in the 77th minute of Sunday’s 3-0 win over MAFCO at Civo Stadium.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Civil Service United, Nyirenda highlighted the Zimbabwean forward alongside George Chaomba and Paul Master as examples of the options available to him.
“That is a good sign that we are now championship contenders: having players who can come in and make a difference,” he said.
“You look at George Chaomba, Tinaye Tsimba, Paul Master and others, and the way they have been coming into games over the past two weeks.
“It shows that our depth is growing, and that is something a coach should be very proud of.”
Tsimba’s first competitive goals for Bullets strengthened his case for a place in the starting XI. Asked how close the summer signing is to making his first start, Nyirenda indicated that the opportunity is approaching.
“He is a good striker, no doubt. His time will come, and that time is not very far away.”
That competition gives Nyirenda greater flexibility, with the demands of each fixture shaping his selection even when the team is winning.
“We speak to our players individually and as a group, and we make changes when changes are necessary,” he explained.
“We cannot always say we should not change a winning team. A winning team is good, but sometimes, tactically, you need to bring somebody in to change something so that the team keeps winning.”
That approach also requires players awaiting their opportunity to remain ready.
Peter Banda, who has made seven appearances across all competitions this season, was not involved against MAFCO, but Nyirenda stressed that he still has a role to play.
“Every player at Bullets is an important part of the team. They all have a role to play,” he said.
“As it stands, Peter has a chance to prove himself, so you will see what happens on Saturday.”
Bullets return to Mpira Stadium with 36 points from 17 matches, targeting a third successive victory in the second round.
Saturday’s encounter against Civil Service United kicks off at 15:00.
