FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza on Sunday for a Matchweek 4 encounter against Red Lions in the 2026/27 FDH Bank Premiership campaign.
It will be our second match at the newly-built facility after Maule marked the first elite fixture at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium with a 1-0 victory over MAFCO FC a fortnight ago.
The fixture also marks our first top-flight meeting against the Zomba-based soldiers in two seasons following their relegation from the elite division at the end of the 2023 campaign.
Bullets head back to Mwanza with confidence firmly on our side following last weekend’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over rivals Mighty Wanderers at Bingu National Stadium.
The People’s Team will now look to continue turning Joyce Chitsulo Stadium into a stronghold as we push for another important result on home soil.
Standing in our way, however, is a confident Red Lions side that arrives in Mwanza on the back of an emphatic 3-0 victory over Goshen City Dedza Dynamos.
FORM GUIDE
Bullets head into Sunday’s encounter unbeaten after collecting seven points from a possible nine in the opening three matches of the new campaign.
Our season began with a 2-2 draw away to Civil Service United before Maule secured a narrow but important 1-0 victory over MAFCO FC in Mwanza.
The People’s Team then carried that momentum into the Blantyre derby, producing a disciplined display to defeat Wanderers 2-1 and continue climbing the early standings.
Red Lions, meanwhile, opened the season with consecutive 1-1 draws against Creck Sporting Club and Ekhaya FC before registering their first victory of the campaign with a convincing 3-0 result over Goshen City Dedza Dynamos.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Maule have dominated this fixture in recent years despite the traditionally competitive nature of meetings between the two sides.
Out of the last six league encounters, Bullets have won four while the remaining two ended in draws.
Red Lions have also gone nearly two decades without defeating The People’s Team in competitive action, with the last top-flight meeting between the two sides ending in a 1-1 draw at Balaka Stadium during the 2023 season.
THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER
Bullets head into Sunday’s fixture after ending a run of four consecutive defeats against Wanderers in all competitions.
The 2-1 derby victory handed our rivals their first league defeat of the 2026/27 campaign and extended Maule’s unbeaten start to the season.
Red Lions, meanwhile, arrive in Mwanza having scored three unanswered goals in their most recent outing, their biggest victory of the campaign so far.
TEAM NEWS
Bullets continue to manage a number of injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s encounter.
Defenders Ahamad Kung’unde and Frank Willard remain sidelined alongside midfielder Crispin Mapemba and goalkeeper McLean Mwale, who are all nursing injuries.
Forward Maxwell Phodo is also unavailable following his red card against Wanderers.
Despite the absentees, Chirwa still has several attacking and midfield options available as Maule look to maintain momentum during a demanding opening stretch of fixtures.
TACTICAL FOCUS
Bullets are expected to come up against a disciplined and highly physical Red Lions side known for its aggressive approach both on and off the ball.
Controlling tempo and winning second balls could prove decisive, especially in midfield where the visitors often look to disrupt rhythm and force direct contests.
Managing transitions, aerial duels and movement in wide areas will also be key as Maule seek to unlock Red Lions’ defensive structure while maintaining control and defensive balance throughout the contest.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Head Coach Gilbert Chirwa believes Bullets must remain fully focused despite the team’s encouraging start to the campaign.
“We are well aware that every game in the Super League is a unique experience. Red Lions have just been promoted from the National First Division to the Super League and they are doing well.
“We are expecting a difficult game, but we are ready for it because the response from the boys in training has been very positive, and we are ready for the match.”
KEY BATTLE
The midfield contest is expected to play a major role in shaping the outcome of Sunday’s encounter.
When the two sides met in a recent friendly match, Red Lions enjoyed periods of control through their dominance in aerial battles and second-ball situations, frustrating Bullets’ rhythm in central areas.
Transitions and control of loose balls could therefore prove decisive in determining which side dictates the tempo of the match.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Another important three points will be on the line in Mwanza.
While the season is still in its early stages, maintaining momentum and consistency remains crucial in what is expected to be another fiercely competitive FDH Bank Premiership title race.
