The 80th Blantyre derby takes centre stage this Sunday as Mighty Wanderers host FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in a highly anticipated FDH Bank Premiership clash at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
The meeting will be the second between the two sides this season following the NBS Bank Charity Shield encounter played three weeks ago at the same venue.
We head into the derby seeking a response after recent results against our rivals while also looking to build momentum following a steady start to the league campaign.
With four points collected from the opening two matches, Maule now face one of the biggest early tests of the 2026/27 season.
FORM GUIDE
Maule come into the match after collecting four points from the opening two league fixtures.
The People’s Team opened the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Civil Service United at Civo Stadium before securing a 1-0 victory over MAFCO FC at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza.
Gilbert Chirwa’s side has shown encouraging attacking intent in both matches, creating several scoring opportunities despite concerns over finishing in the final third.
Wanderers head into the fixture after maintaining their positive run in recent derby meetings, having also defeated us 1-0 in the NBS Bank Charity Shield last month.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Meetings between Bullets and Wanderers have become increasingly competitive in recent seasons, although the Nomads have enjoyed the better results in the most recent encounters.
The Nomads claimed a 1-0 victory in the NBS Bank Charity Shield three weeks ago through Sama Thierry Tanjong’s second-half strike at Bingu National Stadium.
Sunday’s contest will mark the 80th meeting between the two rivals in one of African football’s most historic fixtures.
THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER
The People’s Team secured its first win of the season courtesy of a Vitumbiko Phiri own goal against MAFCO FC at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza last Saturday.
The match also marked a historic moment for Bullets, as it was the club’s first-ever top-flight league game played in the district.
TEAM NEWS
We head into the match with a squad that continues to blend experienced players with several new arrivals and promoted talents who have already featured prominently during the opening weeks of the campaign.
New signings such as Clever Kalambo, George Chaomba and Emmanuel Kaunga have settled quickly into the side, while competition for places across the squad remains strong.
We will, however, be without Ahamad Kung’unde, Mike Mkwate, Frank Willard and Chrispin Mapemba due to injuries.
Mkwate had returned to training ahead of the MAFCO fixture but suffered a recurrence of the same injury after training twice with the squad.
Goalkeeping competition also remains one of the major talking points within the squad, with Innocent Nyasulu and Pilirani Mapira both featuring in the opening league matches while McLean Mwale continues pushing for opportunities.
TACTICAL FOCUS
The midfield battle is once again expected to play a decisive role. In the last four meetings, Wanderers have dominated the midfield and used that advantage to control the games against Bullets.
For Maule, much will also depend on the effectiveness of our wingers, whose pace and direct attacking play could trouble Wanderers in the final third.
Heading into the match at Bingu National Stadium, Bullets may be considered underdogs, but derby matches of this magnitude are often unpredictable, and current form rarely matters.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Head coach Gilbert Chirwa says the team is determined to respond positively in the derby.
“It’s very possible because in football, you don’t give up. We are always encouraging our boys to believe in themselves and to go out there, play to our best so that we can beat Wanderers.”
The Bullets coach also stressed the importance of mentality and concentration heading into Sunday’s encounter.
“I want my players to show fighting spirit and resilience because this is a big match. The concentration should be top-notch.”
OPPOSITION VIEW
Wanderers assistant coach Macdonald Mtetemera says the Nomads are confident ahead of the Blantyre derby following their recent run in the fixture.
Speaking during Wanderers’ pre-match media briefing in Lilongwe, Mtetemera said his side had prepared strongly both mentally and physically for the encounter.
“We have prepared the boys both mentally and physically. We have the depth of squad and nothing should stop us come Sunday,” he said.
Mtetemera also pointed to improvements within the Wanderers squad since recent matches against Bullets and Creck Sporting Club.
“All I can say is that our fans will watch beautiful football come Sunday.”
The Nomads head into the contest seeking a fifth consecutive victory over Bullets following their recent dominance in the rivalry.
KEY BATTLE
Midfield control and transitions into attacking areas could prove decisive in Sunday’s contest.
Our ability to convert chances and manage key moments against Wanderers’ defensive organisation is expected to shape the direction of the derby.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Beyond the points, pride and bragging rights are on the line. Maule are desperate to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat to our rivals — something that has never happened before — and will be determined to bounce back and reassert ourselves in this fierce rivalry.
