Chawanangwa Gumbo believes the backing of supporters will be crucial as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets look to build on Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Blue Eagles and sustain their push for the FDH Bank Premiership title.
The People’s Team returned from a five-week midseason break with victory at Mpira Stadium, where Gumbo’s stunning second-half strike and Ephraim Kondowe’s penalty sent Wedson Nyirenda’s side to the summit on 33 points.
Named Player of the Match, the midfielder acknowledged the challenges ahead but insisted Bullets are determined to maintain their winning momentum.
“There is still a long way to go, and we cannot do it alone. We need our supporters behind us as we push for more victories. It won’t be easy, but we’re eager to keep on winning,” he said.
Reflecting on Sunday’s encounter, Gumbo acknowledged that Blue Eagles had prepared well for the contest, forcing Bullets to adjust their approach after a difficult opening spell.
The visitors frustrated Nyirenda’s men in the first half before the hosts found a way through after the break.
“We prepared well, but they also had their own plan, and we knew we were in for a tough game. When you don’t score early, you risk allowing your opponents into the game, so we needed a Plan B to find a breakthrough and get the three points. We scored in the second half because we kept pushing for the win,” he explained.
Gumbo eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with a fine strike that left Blue Eagles goalkeeper Precious Masamba with no chance.
The midfielder revealed that he trusted his instincts when the opportunity to shoot presented itself.
“I saw the opportunity and decided to shoot. I was in a good position and confident the goalkeeper wouldn’t save it. You won’t score from every chance, but when the opportunity comes, you have to take it. That’s exactly what I did,” he added.
His performance earned him a second individual accolade of the season, but Gumbo was quick to share the recognition with his teammates, acknowledging their contribution to his success.
“This award isn’t mine alone. My teammates have played a big part in it, and I dedicate it to them. It gives me even more motivation to keep working hard,” he said.
The People’s Team will next travel to face MAFCO FC, looking to build on Sunday’s victory and consolidate top spot in the FDH Bank Premiership.
