Ephraim Kondowe came as a halftime substitute to equalise as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets earned a point at Blue Eagles

Report: Blue Eagles 1-1 Bullets

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets fought back from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Blue Eagles in Saturday’s FDH Bank Premiership encounter at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Ephraim Kondowe struck early in the second half to earn The People’s Team a point on the road after Tonic Viyuyi had given the home side the lead before the break.

Gilbert Chirwa’s men produced an improved second-half display and created several opportunities to complete the turnaround in an entertaining contest between the two sides.

Hosts Start Brightly

Blue Eagles began the match on the front foot and nearly took an early lead inside two minutes when Micium Mhone’s dangerous corner caused a goalmouth scramble, but Innocent Nyasulu reacted quickly to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

The hosts continued to threaten through Webster Mzunda down the right flank, with another dangerous delivery forcing Nyasulu into action before Mologeni cleared the danger.

Bullets gradually settled into the contest and created a promising opening in the 26th minute after Wongani Lungu won a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Clever Kalambo stepped up and produced a powerful effort that was well saved by Precious Masamba before the resulting corner was dealt with by the hosts.

The cops responded with another attacking move moments later, but Mologeni made a timely clearance after Mzunda threatened inside the area.

Viyuyi Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 38th minute.

Davie Phiri delivered a free-kick into the penalty area where Gilbert Chirwa flicked the ball into the path of Viyuyi, who headed home unmarked to hand the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Bullets pushed for a response before halftime through a series of set-pieces, but the cops defended resolutely to carry their advantage into the break.

Kondowe Levels for Bullets

Chirwa responded at the restart by introducing Misheck Billiat and Kondowe for Peter Banda and Mologeni as Maule switched from a 4-3-3 shape to a more aggressive 3-5-2 setup.

The tactical adjustment paid off quickly.

Five minutes into the second half, Master forced Masamba into a save before Kondowe reacted quickest to stab home the rebound from close range and restore parity for Bullets.

The equaliser shifted momentum towards the visitors, who began to dominate possession and create better opportunities.

Safuli and Billiat both went close as Bullets increased the pressure, while Lungu narrowly missed the target with a powerful long-range effort that flashed wide of Masamba’s right-hand post.

Master also produced an influential midfield display against his former club, earning the FDH Bank Premiership Player of the Match award after controlling large spells of the contest for The People’s Team.

Bullets Push for Winner

Chirwa introduced George Chaomba and Chawanangwa Gumbo midway through the second half as Bullets continued to grow into the contest while pushing aggressively for a late winner.

The visitors came agonisingly close in the 75th minute when Kondowe’s header crashed against the post from Chaomba’s excellent delivery before his rebound effort was blocked by Benet Konyo.

Moments later, Gumbo tested Masamba from another Bullets corner, but the goalkeeper gathered comfortably.

The cops still posed a threat on the counterattack late in the game, with Mzunda forcing Nyasulu into another important save in the closing stages.

Mpokera was introduced deep into added time after Jovinala was forced off injured, but neither side could find a decisive breakthrough in the closing moments.

The result sees Bullets collect another valuable away point in the early stages of the 2026/27 campaign.

Chirwa’s men have now recorded three draws and two victories from their opening five league matches this season.

Bullets remain fourth on the FDH Bank Premiership table with nine points, while Blue Eagles climbed to the summit with 10 points.

Silver Strikers, who face Mighty Wanderers on Sunday, sit second with nine points, while Red Lions are third on the same number of points following their 1-0 victory over Luanar Mitundu in Zomba on Saturday.
