FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ 1-0 win over MAFCO FC on Sunday at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza was built on control, composure and a growing sense of momentum.
Beyond the result, the performance highlighted both progress and areas for refinement.
Control without clinical edge
Bullets dictated the tempo for long spells in the first half, controlling possession and territory while progressing into attacking areas.
Clever Kalambo was central to that dominance, stretching the defence and creating openings, while Gumbo, Phodo and Dastan Banda all found themselves in promising positions.
The hosts created a number of clear chances inside the opening half hour, including a disallowed goal and an effort off the crossbar, but the final touch was missing.
As Gilbert Chirwa admitted after the match, “we created lots of chances but were very poor in the final third,” a reflection of a half Bullets largely controlled without reward.
Early breakthrough shifts the dynamic
The decisive moment arrived immediately after the restart, when sustained pressure inside the box forced Vitumbiko Phiri into an own goal.
The early goal allowed Bullets to dictate the game on their terms, forcing MAFCO to push forward and leaving spaces in transition.
While additional chances followed, Maule were unable to extend their lead, keeping the contest finely balanced.
Midfield balance and control
Chirwa’s selection placed emphasis on mobility and progression through the thirds.
Bullets were able to move the ball effectively into wide areas and between the lines, with Kalambo frequently finding space and driving at the defence.
The structure allowed for attacking fluency while maintaining enough control to limit MAFCO’s influence in open play.
Composure in the latter stages
After taking the lead, Bullets showed improved composure in the latter stages.
MAFCO introduced attacking changes and became more direct, but clear chances remained limited, with most of their threat coming from set pieces.
The defensive unit remained organised, while the team controlled the tempo to see out the result.
Kalambo’s growing influence
Clever Kalambo once again stood out with a confident and direct performance.
He was involved in several key attacking moments, including hitting the crossbar and having a goal ruled out, while consistently stretching the MAFCO defence.
His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and underlined his growing importance in the team.
Finishing remains the key area
Despite the win, Bullets’ efficiency in front of goal remains the main area for improvement.
The number of chances created, particularly in the first half, highlights a side capable of controlling matches, but converting those opportunities will be crucial in tighter contests.
It remains an area that will demand attention as the campaign progresses.
Momentum heading into the derby
The victory provides a timely boost as attention turns to the Blantyre Derby next weekend.
With confidence building and structure taking shape, Bullets will be aiming to carry this momentum into one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic calendar.
