The young Bullets suffered their first defeat of the FCB Katswiri Under-19 League campaign following a narrow 1-0 loss at Mpira Stadium on Monday morning.
The result ended Bullets Under-19’s seven-match unbeaten start to the season, during which Yamikani Fodya’s youngsters collected 17 points.
Fodya’s side made a bright start and came close to opening the scoring when Hassan Madula struck the crossbar after Chawanangwa Mhango had been denied. Bullets pushed for a response after falling behind in the 24th minute, but their second-half pressure went unrewarded.
Bright start goes unrewarded
Bullets started with good intensity and created an early opening from a corner in the fifth minute.
Joel Maziya delivered the set piece into the penalty area and found Esau Kumwenda, whose effort was well saved by goalkeeper Lawrence Kanyoza.
Agumbala Stars showed attacking intent of their own and won a corner two minutes later, but Ahmad Ayami rose well to clear the danger and relieve the pressure.
Bullets continued to control the tempo and pushed forward again in the 14th minute when Osman George delivered a dangerous cross into the box, only for the hosts’ defence to react quickly and clear.
Three minutes later, Hassan Assima surrendered possession at the back and presented Agumbala with an opening, but the resulting effort went wide.
Bullets responded immediately with their clearest opportunity of the half.
George released Madula, who drove forward before sending the ball into the area for Mhango. Kanyoza saved the forward’s effort, but Madula reacted quickly to the rebound and crashed his follow-up against the crossbar.
Fodya’s side continued to probe and worked a corner short in the 20th minute, with George combining with Kumwenda before receiving the return pass and sending his attempt wide.
Four minutes later, Bullets found themselves behind.
Assima initially produced an excellent save to deny the hosts, but Agumbala maintained the pressure and won a corner.
The resulting delivery was met by Rowland Nthumbu, who headed home to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Bullets looked for an immediate response and Madula delivered another dangerous ball into the penalty area in the 27th minute, but the Agumbala defence recovered to clear.
The hosts then enjoyed their strongest spell of the contest around the half-hour mark, forcing Assima into two excellent saves to prevent Bullets from falling further behind.
At the other end, Thole Sachenja delivered a corner in the 33rd minute and picked out Ayami inside the area, but the defender sent his effort wide.
Agumbala remained dangerous late in the half and threatened twice in quick succession in the 38th minute, with Peace Jacob getting a shot away before Assima again intervened to keep the deficit at one.
Nthumbu’s goal remained the difference at the interval as Bullets went into the break trailing 1-0 after the opening 40 minutes.
Second-half response falls short
Fodya made his first change at the restart, introducing Justin Chipewa for Sachenja as Bullets looked for a route back into the contest.
The young Bullets almost found one immediately.
Mhango received the ball inside the penalty area in the 43rd minute and had a golden opportunity to restore parity, but Kanyoza produced another important save.
Agumbala threatened at the opposite end two minutes later when Jacob found space to shoot, but his effort went wide.
Bullets quickly returned to the attack and won a corner, with George delivering for Chipewa, whose resulting effort was comfortably gathered by Kanyoza.
Emmanuel Mapundi was required defensively in the 52nd minute, making a crucial clearance as the hosts pushed forward in search of a second goal.
Fodya made another change two minutes later, introducing Samuel Mpinda for Ayami.
Dalitso Andrew was shown a yellow card in the 55th minute following a foul on Kumwenda.
Both sides then made adjustments in the 56th minute.
Agumbala introduced Nando Winga and Grezan Pretty for Kingsley Banda and goalscorer Nthumbu, while Bullets sent on Vincent Dalileni for Mhango.
Bullets increasingly took the initiative as they searched for an equaliser, but the hosts remained organised at the back and dealt with the pressure.
Fodya made a double substitution in the 68th minute, introducing Blessings Lungu and Misheck Bekka for Kumwenda and captain Madula.
Agumbala responded a minute later when Prince Chimbalanga replaced Henry Paul.
Bullets continued to look for a way through and George delivered another dangerous cross into the box in the 75th minute, but Kanyoza was alert to gather before the visitors could capitalise.
The hosts won a corner two minutes later, but Assima dealt with the resulting effort and cleared the danger.
Bullets continued to push during the closing stages, but Agumbala protected their narrow advantage through to the final whistle.
The result leaves Bullets Under-19 second on 17 points from eight matches. Ekhaya Youth moved to 23 points from nine games after a 2-1 victory over Mighty Wanderers Youth, leaving Fodya’s side six points off the summit with a game in hand. Wanderers remain third on 16 points from eight matches.
Fodya stresses development after setback
Fodya felt his side created enough opportunities to take something from the contest but acknowledged that Agumbala were more effective in the decisive moments.
“It was a good game from both teams. They took their opportunity and got themselves in front, while we also created chances but did not make enough of them. Once they had the lead, they defended it well and managed to see the game through.”
The Bullets coach stressed that setbacks are an important part of the development process for a young group experiencing defeat for the first time this season.
“These are young players and they are still learning in every aspect of the game. Development comes through different experiences. We have won matches, we have drawn matches and now we have experienced defeat. All of that is important in helping them grow and understand the game better.”
Fodya said the focus will now be on identifying where his players fell short and addressing those areas on the training ground.
“Our responsibility is to keep encouraging them and help them understand where they need to improve. We will go back to training, look at the mistakes we made and work on correcting them.”
Despite the setback, he remains encouraged by the progress of the group eight matches into the campaign.
“They are still young and there is a bright future ahead of them. We are only eight games into the season. We will take the lessons from this match, work on the areas that need improvement and continue developing the team.”
