Mponda eyes strong performance in Sunday’s FCB at 30 encounter

All roads lead to Bingu National Stadium this weekend as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets take on Silver Strikers in a high-stakes celebratory showdown. Head coach Peter Mponda says The People’s Team are ready to rise to the occasion.

The fixture is part of First Capital Bank’s 30th anniversary celebrations and will be played on Sunday afternoon in Lilongwe.

It marks the first of two upcoming heavyweight encounters between Malawi’s most decorated clubs, with the Airtel Top 8 Cup final also set for 12 July at the same venue.

Kick-off is set for 15:00, but festivities will begin in the morning with pre-match activities celebrating FCB’s three decades of excellence, football development, and community impact.

Mponda: We’re Taking It Seriously

Speaking ahead of the clash, Mponda emphasised that while the occasion is festive, the approach will be competitive.

“It’s a very important game for us and our sponsors as well. They’ve done so much for our football club,” he told club media on Friday.

“From a technical and tactical point of view, it’ll be a great test. We’ll also use it to give game time to some players who haven’t featured much. But we’ll field a strong team—fans deserve to enjoy every minute.”

Bullets edged Silver 1-0 earlier this season in the TNM Super League opener at the same venue, with Babatunde Adepoju scoring the winner.

Football With Purpose

As part of the FCB at 30 celebrations, proceeds from the match will be donated to the Football Association of Malawi’s Luwinga Inclusive Academy in Mzuzu, a youth-focused initiative promoting inclusive football development.

Beyond its sponsorship of Bullets, FCB continues to play a major role in local talent development through its long-running support of the FCB Under-20 League (formerly the First Merchant Bank U-20 League). That competition has produced several current Bullets stars, including Blessings Mpokera, Chawanangwa Gumbo, Chikumbutso Salima, Wongani Lungu, and Yamikani Mologeni.
