The international break is over, and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to TNM Super League action on Sunday afternoon with a crucial home fixture against Civil Service United at Kamuzu Stadium.
It’s an important test for Peter Mponda’s men, who continue to chase Mighty Wanderers in the title race. Bullets will also be aiming to avenge July’s 2-1 first-round defeat in Lilongwe and respond strongly after a challenging run of results before the break.
Civil, however, have always made this fixture competitive, consistently pushing Bullets regardless of venue.
FORM GUIDE
Both teams come into this match searching for a response.
Before the international break, Bullets suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wanderers in the FDH Bank Cup semifinal at Kamuzu Stadium. They were later held to a goalless draw away to Blue Eagles at Nankhaka in the league.
Civil were also knocked out of the FDH Bank Cup following a narrow loss to Silver Strikers at Bingu National Stadium. In their last league outing, they fell 1-0 to Chitipa United at Civo Stadium.
In the TNM Super League standings, Bullets sit second with 50 points from 22 games, two behind leaders Mighty Wanderers, who held Silver Strikers 2-2 at the Bingu National Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Civil are fourth with 37 points from the same number of fixtures.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Bullets have dominated this fixture for the past decade, with Civil managing only one win in the last 18 league meetings.
The rivalry has produced memorable moments, including several home-and-away doubles between 2014 and 2016, a 3-0 home win in 2017, a commanding 6-0 victory in 2019, and successive 2-1 wins in the 2020/21 season.
Recent years have seen tighter encounters, although Bullets still had the upper hand in cup competitions, defeating Civil in both the FDH Bank Cup and Airtel Top 8.
In the first round this season, Civil picked up a rare win, beating Bullets 2-1 at Civo Stadium.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Assistant coach Gilbert Chirwa says the international break came at the right time, allowing the team to reset and correct key areas after a difficult spell.
“We used the break well. The boys have responded positively in training and we believe we are ready for Sunday,” he told Bullets Media.
Chirwa stressed the importance of turning chances into goals after dominating recent matches without scoring. He also welcomed the Flames quartet — Babatunde, Mpokera, Salima and Singo — who have returned in strong condition.
He added that Civil always present a tough challenge, but the squad feels ready and confidence is growing again.
TEAM NEWS
Bullets will be without defender Aaron Chilipa, who remains sidelined with a knee injury sustained in training before the international break.
The squad has been boosted by the return of Babatunde Adepoju, Blessings Mpokera, Chikumbutso Salima, and Yankho Singo, who have all rejoined the squad after national duty and are available for selection.
