FCB Nyasa Big Bullets interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa reflected on his team’s performance and the key moments that defined the Castel Challenge Cup final.
A second-half brace from Hassan Kajoke secured a 2-1 victory for Bullets, clinching our second Castel Challenge Cup and sealing a memorable domestic double to conclude the 2025/26 campaign.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chirwa highlighted that disciplined defending, tactical awareness, and capitalizing on key opportunities were decisive in keeping the team in control throughout the match.
“We expected Dedza to be a tough opponent, and that’s exactly what we faced. The first half ended goalless, but we stayed patient and executed our strategy. In the second half, we noticed small signs of fatigue in their defence, and the boys capitalized on that,” Chirwa said.
The coach also hailed goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu, whose two crucial saves, including a match-defining stop in the final minutes, kept the trophy within reach.
“Nyasulu is one of Malawi’s best shot-stoppers. His performance today proved why — he kept us in the game at critical moments and made the difference between winning and drawing,” Chirwa added.
Reflecting on the season overall, the former Bullets defender emphasized the significance of our domestic achievements.
“Despite narrowly missing the league title and FDH Bank Cup, Bullets captured two major trophies this season, underlining the team’s consistency and winning culture,” he said.
The coach also highlighted the importance of the supporters’ presence at the final.
“Seeing the fans come out in numbers, even after some league disappointments, was incredible. Their support motivates the players and adds to the feeling of achievement,” Chirwa remarked.
For Chirwa, winning the cup as a coach at the club he once represented as a player makes the moment particularly special.
“As a coach, this is a career highlight. Since taking over [as interim head coach in December], the players have been committed and disciplined. Finishing with two trophies is something I will always cherish,” he concluded.
