Blessings Mpokera has called for more from the team following FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ 2-2 draw against Civil Service United in the opening match of the 2026/27 FDH Bank Premiership at Civo Stadium on Saturday.
It was Mpokera’s second game as first team captain, following last week’s 1-0 NBS Bank Charity Shield defeat to Mighty Wanderers.
As 17-time league champions, Maule are aiming to reclaim the title in the FDH Bank Premiership era after finishing third in 2024 and second in 2025, adding greater urgency to the need for stronger starts.
The skipper acknowledged that lapses in concentration proved costly, with Maule surrendering the lead on two occasions in Lilongwe.
“We were the ones leading the game twice, and they kept coming back. That shows our concentration dropped at certain moments, and it’s something we need to correct.”
He was clear that such moments must be managed better.
Mpokera stressed that while the performance showed promise going forward, the team must raise its standards, particularly in managing key moments of the game.
“I think we did well in some phases, especially going forward, but we have to be more focused when we are leading. That’s where the game is won.”
The captain also urged supporters to stay behind the team as the campaign begins, highlighting the importance of unity at this early stage of the season.
“This is just the first game of the season, and we still have many matches ahead, including cup competitions. The team needs the support of our fans as we continue to build.”
He added that negativity at this stage can affect the group, calling for continued backing from the supporters.
“Negative comments can demoralise the group, so we need to stay together as a team, alongside our supporters.”
Mpokera reaffirmed the squad’s commitment to getting better, emphasizing the work being done behind the scenes.
“The team is working hard every day, and we will keep pushing to get better in every game.”
Looking ahead, the captain underlined the need for reflection and togetherness as Maule aim to build momentum.
“We will go back, reflect on what we did well and where we need to improve, and keep encouraging each other so that we deliver stronger performances in the coming games.”
Bullets sit fifth on the table after Matchweek 1 on one point, following the 2-2 draw away to Civil Service United.
Silver Strikers lead the standings following a 2-0 victory over Kamuzu Barracks, with Blue Eagles and Masters FC also on three points from their opening matches.
Civil Service United are fourth, while Creck Sporting Club, MAFCO FC, Mitundu Baptist and Red Lions are all level on one point alongside Maule.
Goshen City Dedza Dynamos and Moyale FC follow after playing out a goalless draw in Rumphi.
Karonga United and Mighty Wanderers’ fixture was cancelled following the venue impasse at Kamuzu Stadium, which failed to meet club licensing requirements.
Attention now turns to our first home fixture of the season, as Maule prepare to host MAFCO FC in the next FDH Bank Premiership assignment.
