FCB Nyasa Big Bullets produced a resilient display to defeat Mighty Wanderers 2-1 in Sunday’s FDH Bank Premiership Blantyre derby at Bingu National Stadium.
Goals from captain Blessings Mpokera and Maxwell Phodo guided Maule to an important early-season win in a fiercely contested encounter between the two rivals.
The People’s Team headed into the match determined to avoid a fifth straight defeat against the blue camp.
Fast Start Rewards Bullets
Gilbert Chirwa’s men settled quickly into the contest and took the lead inside five minutes when Ephraim Kondowe was brought down inside the box, allowing Mpokera to calmly convert from the penalty spot.
The early breakthrough gave Bullets confidence in possession, with Clever Kalambo and Maxwell Phodo causing problems in transition during a lively opening spell.
Kalambo nearly doubled the advantage in the 16th minute after testing Chancy Mtete with a powerful effort from distance before Kondowe also threatened moments later, meeting Aaron Chilipa’s delivery with a header that went straight into the Wanderers goalkeeper’s hands.
Wanderers gradually found rhythm through Stanley Sanudi and Isaac Kaliati, who repeatedly looked to stretch play from wide areas.
Mpokera produced one of the key defensive moments of the half when he made a timely clearance to deny Sama Thierry Tanjong from close range following a dangerous cross into the area.
The Nomads continued to threaten from set pieces, but Innocent Nyasulu remained composed in goal and dealt confidently with deliveries into the box as Bullets protected their slender lead.
At the other end, Phodo missed a big opportunity in the 38th minute after breaking forward with Kondowe well positioned inside the area, firing his effort over the crossbar.
Bullets went into the break holding the advantage in the derby thanks to Mpokera’s early penalty.
Phodo Strikes as Bullets Hold Firm
Wanderers returned strongly after the restart and almost levelled three minutes into the second half when Kaliati struck the upright following good work by Sanudi down the left flank.
Chirwa responded with a triple substitution in the 55th minute, introducing Wongani Lungu, George Chaomba and Yamikani Mologeni for Chawanangwa Gumbo, Kondowe and Kalambo.
The changes immediately lifted Bullets, with Chaomba nearly making an instant impact when he forced Mtete into a save with a close-range header shortly after coming on.
Four minutes later, Mologeni delivered an excellent corner into the area and Phodo powered a superb header into the far corner to double Maule’s advantage and silence the Wanderers supporters inside BNS.
Wanderers responded immediately and pulled one back in the 61st minute when Promise Kamwendo converted from the penalty spot following a handball incident involving Andrew Jovinala inside the area.
The Nomads remained aggressive in attack as they intensified pressure in search of an equaliser, dominating possession and repeatedly forcing Bullets deeper inside their own half.
Nyasulu was called into action several times during this spell, including an important intervention in the 63rd minute when he dealt confidently with another dangerous Stanley Sanudi delivery from a set piece.
Gaddie Chirwa also came agonisingly close to levelling matters in the 66th minute after dribbling past three Bullets defenders before seeing his effort strike the upright.
Bullets were forced to withstand more pressure in the closing stages, with Andrew Jovinala briefly receiving treatment after going down injured before Nyasulu produced another important save from Sanudi’s corner delivery in the 73rd minute.
The tension of the derby spilled over in the 78th minute when Phodo and Chirwa were both shown red cards following an altercation, reducing both sides to ten men.
Despite sustained late pressure from Wanderers, Bullets defended resolutely through the closing stages to secure an important derby triumph and move onto four points from their opening two matches of the new league season.
Goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu was named Player of the Match following a series of crucial saves that helped preserve Bullets’ lead during Wanderers’ dominant second-half spell.
