FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are in the Capital City ahead of Saturday’s FDH Bank Premiership clash against Blue Eagles at Civo Stadium.
The People’s Team head into the encounter aiming to quickly return to winning ways after last weekend’s goalless draw against Red Lions in Mwanza.
Saturday’s assignment presents another demanding early-season examination for Gilbert Chirwa’s men against one of the division’s most organised and in-form sides.
Maule will also be eager to close the gap on the teams currently setting the pace at the top of the table after dropping points in our most recent outing.
However, the task in Lilongwe is unlikely to come easy.
Meetings between Maule and Blue Eagles have consistently produced tightly contested battles in recent seasons, with little separating the two sides regardless of the venue.
The hosts are also unbeaten against Bullets in the last three league meetings, including last season’s hard-fought 1-0 victory in Blantyre before the reverse fixture ended goalless at Nankhaka Stadium.
With both sides aiming to strengthen their positions near the top of the table, another intense encounter is expected at Civo Stadium.
FORM GUIDE
Bullets have made a mixed start to the 2026/27 campaign, winning two matches and drawing two in our opening four league fixtures.
Victories over MAFCO FC and Mighty Wanderers provided early momentum, but Maule were unable to build on those results after being held by Red Lions in Mwanza.
The draw saw Bullets slip to fourth position on the table with eight points from four matches.
Blue Eagles, meanwhile, have enjoyed an impressive opening to the season. They have collected nine points from their opening four fixtures and currently sit second on the table, level with leaders Silver Strikers and third-placed Masters Security.
Their victories have come against Ekhaya FC, Silver Strikers and Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, while their only defeat was suffered away to Chitipa United.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Bullets have enjoyed the better record in league meetings between the two sides since the 2013 season.
Across 23 league encounters during that period, The People’s Team have registered ten victories and scored 21 goals compared to Blue Eagles’ five wins, while eight matches have ended in draws.
We completed a league double over Eagles during the 2013 season with a 2-0 victory in Lilongwe before sealing a 3-2 win in the reverse fixture.
The following season saw Maule win 1-0 away before settling for a 1-1 draw at Kamuzu Stadium.
Blue Eagles recorded their biggest victory over Bullets in 2015 when they claimed a 3-0 win at Nankhaka Stadium after the first-round fixture had ended level.
During the 2016 and 2017 campaigns, the fixture continued to produce closely contested outcomes, with Bullets recording victories in both seasons while Blue Eagles also claimed an important home win in Lilongwe.
Maule responded by completing a double over Eagles in 2018 through consecutive 1-0 victories before the two sides shared dominant home wins during the 2019 season.
The first-round meeting of the 2020/21 campaign ended goalless at Kamuzu Stadium before Bullets secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Lilongwe later that season.
The 2022 campaign produced two draws, with both fixtures ending 1-1.
There was no league meeting between the teams in 2024 following Blue Eagles’ relegation at the end of the 2023 campaign.
However, the sides still met in the FDH Bank Cup final at Bingu National Stadium, where Eagles won 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Last season, Ma Eagle secured a narrow 1-0 victory in Blantyre through a late Laurent Banda strike before the reverse fixture ended goalless at Nankhaka Stadium.
THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER
Bullets are still searching for a league victory away to Blue Eagles since the 2020/21 season.
Saturday’s encounter therefore offers Chirwa’s men another opportunity to make a strong statement against one of the division’s early front-runners.
The hosts also head into the fixture in strong form following their 2-0 away victory over Goshen City Dedza Dynamos in their most recent outing.
With both teams positioned near the top end of the standings, the result could prove significant in shaping the early momentum of the title race.
TEAM NEWS
Bullets have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
However, Frank Willard, McLean Mwale and Ahmed Kung’unde remain sidelined as they continue their recovery programmes.
Maxwell Phodo will also miss the encounter as he serves the final match of his suspension following the red card he received against Mighty Wanderers.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Bullets head coach Gilbert Chirwa says the team has worked on correcting the shortcomings identified during last weekend’s draw against Red Lions ahead of Saturday’s clash in Lilongwe.
“We have been working on some weaknesses that we saw in the last game,” said Chirwa.
The head coach also acknowledged the quality of Blue Eagles but insisted Maule are fully prepared for the away assignment.
“We are aware of the opponents we are facing. They are a good side, but we are ready for them.”
OPPOSITION VIEW
Blue Eagles head coach Declerk Msakakuona expects another difficult contest against Bullets as the two sides prepare to meet in Lilongwe on Saturday.
“It’s not going to be an easy match. We know they will come hard considering the two results we had against them last season; our win in Blantyre and the draw at Nankhaka,” said Msakakuona.
“I know this is a different season altogether. As a team, we know they will be determined to get a good result, but we are also ready for the game.”
The Lilongwe-based side head into the fixture aiming to continue their strong start to the campaign after winning three of their opening four league matches.
TACTICAL FOCUS
Declerk Msakakuona’s side are not heavily reliant on building from the back, preferring instead to transition quickly into attacking areas once possession is won.
Their attacking transitions are driven by energetic forward players such as Tonic Viyuyi, Bennet Konyo and Pius Saka.
Veteran winger Micium Mhone also remains an important figure in the side due to his composure in possession and ability to strike from distance.
Blue Eagles also boast a dependable goalkeeper in Precious Masamba, who has impressed since stepping into the role following Joshua Waka’s departure to Ekhaya FC.
The playing surface at Civo Stadium could also influence Saturday’s tactical approach, particularly during transitions and midfield progression.
KEY BATTLE
Midfield control could prove decisive at Civo Stadium, with Bullets expected to rely on quick ball circulation against Blue Eagles’ compact defensive structure and aggressive transitions.
The battle for second balls and space in central areas may heavily influence the rhythm of the contest.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Saturday’s encounter carries early-season significance for both sides as the race for momentum near the top of the table continues to intensify.
Bullets know victory would strengthen our position among the leading sides and provide an immediate response following the dropped points against Red Lions.
For Blue Eagles, another win would further underline their impressive start to the campaign and reinforce their growing status among the division’s strongest performers.
With both teams carrying early momentum into the contest, another fiercely competitive battle is expected in the Capital City on Saturday afternoon.
