FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to Dedza Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face Luanar Mitundu in Matchweek 14 of the FDH Bank Premiership.
It will be our second successive league fixture away from home, with The People’s Team heading into the encounter following a 1-0 victory over Karonga United in the Northern Region.
Luanar begin the matchweek in eighth position with 18 points from 13 matches, but their overall standing tells only part of the story.
Fourteen of those points have been collected at Dedza Stadium, where Oscar Kaunda’s side have lost only once in seven league matches during their debut top-flight campaign.
Ahead of the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, we take a closer look at Luanar’s rise, current form, strength at home and the players who could influence proceedings.
Recent History
Luanar Mitundu are competing in Malawi’s top flight for the first time this season after earning promotion from the National Division League.
Their rise was driven in large part by Raheem Mtondera, who scored 25 goals during the promotion campaign and was named the National Division League Player of the Season.
The transition to Premiership football has brought the expected challenges, but Luanar have quickly shown they are capable of competing at this level.
Their first top-flight fixture produced a 1-1 draw away to MAFCO at Champions Stadium in Mponela, where Emmanuel Nyakutepa scored their opening goal of the campaign.
A week later, they celebrated their first Premiership victory when Emmanuel Chikadza struck the only goal in a 1-0 win over Kamuzu Barracks at Dedza Stadium.
Three successive defeats then tested Kaunda’s side, with losses against Masters FC, Mighty Wanderers and Red Lions interrupting their promising start.
Their response has been one of the defining features of the campaign.
Luanar returned to Dedza and beat Civil Service United 3-0, with Mtondera scoring twice and Moses Nyirenda adding the other goal, before beginning a run that established their home ground as the foundation of their first-round campaign.
Current Form
Luanar occupy eighth position with 18 points from 13 league matches, having recorded five victories, three draws and five defeats.
They have scored 12 goals and conceded 12, leaving them with an even goal difference.
After their 3-0 victory over Civil Service United, Kaunda’s men suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Moyale Barracks but responded again when they returned home.
Nyakutepa, Mtondera and Vincent Nyangulu all scored as Luanar defeated Blue Eagles 3-2 at Dedza Stadium.
A goalless draw against Ekhaya followed before they claimed their only away league victory so far, beating Creck Sporting Club 1-0 at Aubrey Dimba Stadium through Mtondera’s penalty.
Luanar then held Silver Strikers to a 1-1 draw in Dedza after Samuel Phiri scored a second-half equaliser.
Their next home assignment brought another three points, with Rashid Daa and Nicholas Kalondole finding the net in a 2-0 victory over Karonga United.
The sequence underlined a clear pattern in Luanar’s first Premiership season: Dedza Stadium has provided the platform for many of their strongest performances.
From seven home league matches, they have registered four wins and two draws, with their only defeat coming against defending champions Mighty Wanderers.
That record has earned them 14 points from a possible 21 at home, accounting for the majority of their overall tally.
Their latest outing ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Chitipa United, meaning Luanar return home looking for a response.
Mtondera leads their league scoring chart with four goals, while Nyakutepa has scored twice and remains one of their main creative outlets in the final third.
Against Bullets
Sunday’s fixture will be the first competitive meeting between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Luanar Mitundu.
It will also bring Bullets back to Dedza Stadium for the second time this season.
Our previous visit ended in a 1-0 defeat to Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, which remains the only league loss Wedson Nyirenda’s side have suffered in 13 matches.
Bullets have responded with consecutive victories since that afternoon, defeating Chitipa United 2-0 before Ephraim Kondowe’s goal secured a 1-0 win away to Karonga United.
Those results have moved The People’s Team into third position with 26 points, level with second-placed Mighty Wanderers and two behind leaders Silver Strikers.
Sunday therefore presents a different test at a familiar venue: Bullets return to the ground where our unbeaten league run ended, this time against opponents who have built much of their first-round success around their home form.
Key Players
Raheem Mtondera
Mtondera is Luanar’s principal attacking threat and remains one of the most important figures in their transition from the National Division League to the top flight.
The striker entered the season after scoring 25 goals in their promotion campaign and being named the division’s Player of the Season.
He has carried that influence into the FDH Bank Premiership, where he currently leads Luanar’s scoring chart with four goals.
His pace, movement and ability to attack space give Kaunda’s side a focal point in the final third, while his aerial strength adds another dimension inside the penalty area.
Mtondera has already been decisive in several of Luanar’s positive results and will be one of the main threats Bullets will need to contain on Sunday.
Tamandani Ngulube
Ngulube has emerged as one of Luanar’s standout performers in defence.
The centre-back has brought strength, composure and consistency to Kaunda’s backline and has already collected two Player of the Match awards in his debut top-flight campaign.
Strong in aerial contests and comfortable when defending under pressure, Ngulube has played an important role in a defensive unit that has conceded 12 goals in 13 league matches.
His presence will be central to Luanar’s attempts to protect a home record that has been one of the strongest features of their season.
Emmanuel Nyakutepa
Nyakutepa provides another important dimension to Luanar’s attacking play.
He scored their first goal of the Premiership campaign against MAFCO and has since taken his league tally to two, while also contributing regularly as a creator.
His understanding with Mtondera has given Luanar a productive combination in the final third, particularly at Dedza Stadium.
Direct in possession and capable of finding space around the penalty area, Nyakutepa offers both a scoring threat and the ability to create openings for teammates.
Luanar have built much of their first-season success around Dedza Stadium, where only one visiting side has beaten them in the league.
Bullets return to the same venue where we suffered our only league defeat of the campaign, setting up an intriguing first competitive meeting between the two sides on Sunday.
