Bullets head coach believes modern football is increasingly being shaped by fearless young players and wants the club’s emerging talent to embrace the same mindset.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda believes age should no longer define influence on the pitch, encouraging his younger players to believe they can shoulder responsibility and help drive the team forward.
The Bullets mentor says modern football has evolved, with many of the world’s biggest clubs and national teams now relying on young players to deliver success instead of waiting for experienced stars to lead the way.
He shared that message during Thursday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s FDH Bank Premiership fixture against Creck Sporting Club at Mpira Stadium.
“The biggest one is also the confidence of these players. I am discussing the new trends with them. Previously, people believed teams could not succeed without experienced players, but look at the new trend. The young ones are now carrying the burden of big teams.”
Nyirenda said he has encouraged his players to study recent trends in world football, where emerging talents have become key figures for both club and country.
“Since the previous UEFA Champions League and the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, we looked at the new trends. Those youngsters are now carrying the burden.”
“If you look at Ivory Coast, they had Adingra and Diakite. South Africa had Thapelo, a young player who made an impact, and Senegal also had young players stepping up. That’s what is needed from our youngsters.”
The Bullets head coach believes the same pattern is evident across Europe’s biggest leagues, where young players continue to influence matches at the highest level.
“If we go to Europe, there is Lamine Yamal alongside Nico Williams with Spain, and Jamal Musiala for Germany. Across LaLiga, Germany and the Premier League, there are 19-year-olds carrying their teams.”
For Nyirenda, the message to his young players is simple: stop waiting for senior teammates to carry the team and embrace the responsibility yourselves.
“What we are telling these players is not to have white hair for them to play. There is nothing like the big ones have to carry the team. No, you have to carry the team and do it yourself.”
“We are doing this to at least enlighten them about the game.”
For Nyirenda, developing fearless young players is about more than preparing them for the future. It is about building a squad in which every player, regardless of age, has the confidence to influence matches, take responsibility and help drive The People’s Team towards success.
