Mponda: “We know the importance of these three points”

Head coach Peter Mponda says FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are fully focused on collecting maximum points when The People’s Team face Mafco FC in the TNM Super League on Sunday afternoon at Champion Stadium in Mponela.

Fresh from a vital 2-0 win over Mzuzu City Hammers on Thursday, Bullets are looking to build momentum as the title race intensifies.

Ahead of the fixture, Mponda spoke to Bullets Media about the importance of consistency, Mafco’s form, Innocent Nyasulu’s standout performances, and the team’s fighting spirit.

Building on Thursday’s win

“Every game is important for Bullets, and these three points are crucial if we are to stay in the title race,” Mponda said.

“We’ve been inconsistent—some games we play well, others we grind results, and in some we just don’t show up. The boys know this, and we’ve had those conversations. I believe we’ve prepared well and they will step up.”

Facing an in-form Mafco side

Despite Mafco’s impressive recent form and their unbeaten home run against Bullets in the last two seasons, Mponda insists the focus remains on his side.

“I’m not worried about their form or that record. What matters is the three points. We know they’re a good team, but we’ve prepared well and we’re going there to win.”

First competitive game at Champion Stadium

Sunday’s fixture will be the first time Bullets play a competitive match at Champion Stadium.

“Our final training session showed us the pitch is in better shape than when we last played a friendly there. The team is coming together nicely. We’re not yet where we want to be, but we’re improving.

“This is a different game, and we need every player to approach it with the right mentality.”

Praise for Nyasulu and the team

The head coach was full of praise for goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu, who has been in fine form in recent matches.

“He has been brilliant—not only against Hammers, but also in the Airtel Top 8 final against Silver Strikers. But it’s not just Innocent. A lot of players are doing well, and that’s very encouraging.”

Fighting spirit and title ambition

Bullets have made a habit of scoring late goals in tight games, something Mponda attributes to the team’s mentality.

“The pitch in Rumphi wasn’t ideal, but the players gave everything to win. That fighting spirit is key in this championship race. The players know the importance of every point, and we’ll need that again on Sunday.

“Mafco are a tough team, especially at home, but we’re ready for the challenge.”

First round reflections

“It’s been up and down. Some days we’ve looked really good, other days we’ve been shaky, particularly in defence. It’s a new team, still coming together, and while we’ve had some tough games, we’re serious contenders.

“We may be a few points behind, but we’re still in the race.”
