The 2022 soccer season in Malawi will kick off on March 5 with a Charity Shield encounter between Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) revealed this following a meeting by the FA’s competitions committee held on Saturday in Blantyre.
This has since seen the start of the TNM Super League shifted to March 12 from 26 February, as previously communicated by the Super League of Malawi (SULOM).
Director of Competitions at FAM, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said following the weekend meeting: “The Charity Shield, which did not take place last season [due to Covid-19] is back this season and it will be participated by Super League winners Nyasa Big Bullets and FDH Cup winners Silver Strikers.
“As FAM, we are currently finalizing everything and we will be providing information in the coming days so that we make the event very successful.”
The two heavyweights will set the stage for the start of new season following their meeting in the final of the Airtel Top 8 on December 18 when The People’s Team lifted the cup for the first time to complete a double after defending the league championship for a third consecutive year.
Bullets are the most successful team in as far as the Charity Shield is concerned after winning it four times in a row from 2016 to 2019.
It will be another busiest year for the Malawi champions as they will be eyeing to defend both the league and Airtel Top 8 Cup as Kalisto Pasuwa’s side will also be vying for the FDH Bank Cup, which they failed to win last season after going down to Silver Strikers in the quarter-finals in August.
Bullets on Monday entered week three of their preparations for the new season as Pasuwa and his backroom staff are working on both fitness and formations following the departure of eleven players released by The People’s Team and the arrival of new members of the squad.
