Ernest Kakhobwe, Gomegzani Chirwa and TNM Super League Player of the Season Chimwemwe Idana have been named in Malawi’s 23-man squad that will compete in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon next month.
Of the three Nyasa Big Bullets players, Kakhobwe is the most capped in AFCON after playing in all the qualifiers and kept four clean sheets.
He kept back to back clean sheets against South Sudan before a heroic performance during Malawi’s goalless draw against Burkina Faso at Kamuzu Stadium.
In the final qualification match, Kakhobwe kept another clean sheet against Uganda in which Malawi won 1-0 to seal their place at the AFCON finals.
Chirwa played only a single AFCON qualifying game against Uganda in which the Flames lost 2-0, whilst Idana has played as a substitute in less than three games.
The Flames are currently in Saudi Arabia for preparations, before connecting to Bafoussam City for the continental football event.
Malawi is in Group B and will compete against Guinea, Senegal, and Zimbabwe in the group stages.
The team will be using the 20,000 seater Kauekong Stadium and will open their Group B matches against Guinea on 10th January.
