Lanjesi Nkhoma: It has been a wonderful season

Lanjesi Nkhoma says the just-ended 2023 season has been wonderful after scoring 20 goals in all competitions to help FCB Nyasa Big Bullets complete a historic quadruple.

The Bullets wing forward, who scored a brace as Kalisto Pasuwa’s side beat Mafco FC 2-1 to win the Airtel Top 8 Cup at Kamuzu Stadium, also finished as the competition’s top scorer.

Nkhoma, who headed into Saturday’s final match with a goal behind teammates Maxwell Phodo and Hassan Kajoke, netted the opener in the 22nd minute before Mafco’s equaliser 12 minutes later through Nickson Nyasulu’s own goal.

In the second half, he scored the winner in the 72nd minute to win the Airtel Top 8 final for The People’s Team and was named Man of the Match.

Our top scorer with 20 goals in all competitions this season, Saturday’s brace against the Salima soldiers saw the 26-year-old setting a record for scoring in every cup final he played in the 2023 campaign.

The Malawi international found the back of the net twice in our 3-0 victory over Mafco in the FDH Bank Cup final. He also scored the equaliser in the 1-1 Castel Challenge Cup final against Silver Strikers, who lost to Bullets 4-2 on post-match penalties.

In his third season with the first team following his promotion from our reserves side in 2021, Nkhoma finished second top goal scorer in the 2023 TNM Super League campaign with 14 goals, two behind Golden Boot winner Clement Nyondo of Dedza Dynamos.

“It has been a wonderful season for me and the team [in a season] we have won everything. I am very grateful to my teammates, coaches and fans for what we have achieved this season. We started on a low, but we picked up and now we are here. I am also thrilled with this [Airtel Top 8 Golden Boot] accolade,” he told club media.

Last season, he shared the Airtel Top 8 Golden Boot with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ forward Chiukepo Msowoya and Dedza’s Nyondo after the trio had netted two goals each in the competition.
