Reaction: Munthali takes positives from mini-derby loss

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves head coach Heston Munthali says his side can take positives from their performance despite a 2-0 defeat to city rivals Mighty Wanderers Reserves in the first mini-Blantyre derby of the 2025 ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League at Mpira Stadium on Monday afternoon.

After a balanced first half that ended goalless, the game swung in the second period as the hosts struck twice in quick succession to seal the win — a result that sees Bullets drop to third place in the standings.

Munthali praised the effort and commitment shown by his players but admitted that missed chances and lapses in communication at the back proved costly.

“It was a good game and the boys played well. In the first half, we commanded the game from the back going forward and created chances, but we didn’t take them,” he commented after the final whistle.

The coach felt his side still carried the same intent after making changes but allowed their opponents in through avoidable mistakes.

“We continued to play well after making substitutions, but we conceded two easy goals due to poor communication between the goalkeeper and the defence. That’s football — sometimes these things happen.”

Munthali stressed that the defeat will not derail the team’s focus, insisting the Reserves remain on the right track in their development.

“We’re not dwelling on the loss; instead, we’re looking ahead to the games coming up and how we can approach them better. The boys are still growing, and it’s important to encourage them. I’m happy with the improvements we’ve made in many areas and I believe we will do even better in the coming matches.”

Bullets Reserves will wrap up their first-round fixtures against Liberty FC, where they will be aiming to bounce back, end their losing streak, and finish the round on a high.
