Head coach Peter Mponda hailed the grit and determination of his FCB Nyasa Big Bullets side after The People’s Team battled to a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Chitipa United in Saturday’s TNM Super League clash at Chitipa Stadium.
Making only their second-ever appearance at the new venue, Bullets showed maturity and composure in difficult conditions, with Henry Chiwaya heading home in the first half before substitute Babatunde Adepoju sealed the points from the penalty spot late on.
Tough Conditions, Strong Response
Speaking after the final whistle, Mponda admitted the environment was exactly as anticipated, but his players rose to the occasion.
“Very tough game for us, but credit must go to the boys for working very hard for these points. It wasn’t an easy game, but that’s what we were expecting, and we have delivered under such a hostile atmosphere,” he said.
Fighting Spirit Above All
The gaffer stressed that the win was built on effort and mentality rather than tactical adjustments.
“I don’t think there was anything tactical in the game. It was about hard work. My players fought for every ball, and that was very encouraging.
“I can’t say we won because of good tactics, but credit must go to the boys for their fighting spirit. That’s what has won us the game today.”
Staying Focused At The Top
The three points moved Bullets to 37 points from 16 matches, putting us two clear of rivals Mighty Wanderers ahead of their Sunday fixture away to Mafco FC in Mponela.
But Mponda emphasised the importance of keeping grounded.
“This is just the first game of the second round. It’s not the final game, and it’s not about moving to the top. Mighty Wanderers have been getting points as well.
“Credit must go to the boys for their gallant fight. They have been fighting in each game, and we are still hanging in there because of their resilience.”
Boosting Confidence
The coach was also encouraged by the confidence the result would instill in his squad heading into their next assignment before the international break. With another congested schedule awaiting The People’s Team after the pause, Mponda stressed that victories like Saturday’s are vital in keeping the players mentally strong and focused for the challenges ahead.
“I am very happy with the way we managed to force these three points. This will boost the confidence of the players. It was about the players fighting for the badge, and credit must go to them,” he underlined.
What Next
Mponda’s men remain in the North for their final fixture before the international break, as they head to Karonga for a meeting with Songwe Border United on Wednesday.
The result in Chitipa ensures The People’s Team travel with momentum, determined to continue collecting full points and defend their place at the summit of the TNM Super League table.
