Gilbert Chirwa’s pre-Mzuzu City press conference

Ahead of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ final TNM Super League fixture of the 2025 season against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday, interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa addressed the club media in his first pre-match press conference since taking charge.

Chirwa spoke about his appointment, preparations for the season finale, the importance of securing second place, and how the squad has responded to changes within the technical panel.

Below is the full interview with the interim head coach.

On his appointment as interim head coach

“I can say that I welcome the decision and the responsibility that comes with it. I am ready to work hard with the boys and move forward together.”

On his immediate plans for the team

“My main task is to organise the players and try to put them in the right shape. We want to do our level best in the final game on Saturday.”

On the players’ acceptance of changes in the technical panel

“It seems the players have welcomed the decision. They understand that it was a management decision and that it was above all of us. The boys are professionals and they know they are here to work for the club.

“With one game remaining, we have to work very hard to win because it is very important. Silver Strikers are also pushing for the number two position.”

On remaining focused ahead of the season finale

“What we have done is to speak to the players through their captains. We agreed that we must all move forward together, and I believe that approach will work for us.”

On the importance of finishing second in the league

“I have been around this team for a long time, so I am not new to the players. I know them very well and I have been working with them all along.

“I know it is not easy, but I will continue to encourage the boys. I believe they will take instructions and do their best to win on Saturday.”

On facing Mzuzu City Hammers

“We need to have a proper game plan for them. It will be a very difficult match, but with the right approach, I believe we can carry the day.”

On his role in guiding the team on the final day

“It is a big challenge, but we will sit down with the players, talk to them, and encourage them to work hard. We do not have much time, so it is about getting straight to business and showing them how important this game is for themselves and for the club.”

On the role of senior players

“Yes, of course. We have spoken to the senior players, and we also have captains who always help us communicate with the rest of the squad and guide them to do the right thing.”

On what a positive result would mean personally

“It would mean a lot to me as a coach. I will continue encouraging the players, and if challenges arise, I will consult my fellow coaches so that we can make the right decisions together.”

His message to the supporters

“I always say that during difficult times, supporters should continue backing the team. We need them even more during this period. I urge them to come and support us on Saturday so that the team can perform well.”

On team news

“Mike Mkwate, Aaron Chilipa, Blessings Mpokera, and Chrispin Mapemba are all unavailable for this match.

“Babatunde Adepoju is now eligible to play after missing the last game through suspension.”
