FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were forced to settle for a point after a tightly contested goalless draw against Red Lions in Sunday’s FDH Bank Premiership encounter at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium.
Despite controlling possession for long periods and producing the better openings, Maule could not find a way past a disciplined Red Lions side as the visitors produced a disciplined defensive display in Mwanza.
Gilbert Chirwa made two changes to the side that started last weekend’s 2-1 Blantyre derby victory over Mighty Wanderers, with Misheck Billiat returning to the starting lineup while Peter Banda was handed his first competitive start of the campaign.
Positive Start Without Reward
Bullets began the match on the front foot and created the first meaningful opening inside four minutes when Billiat tested goalkeeper Precious Mitolo with a low effort that was comfortably saved.
The visitors responded through a dangerous free-kick moments later, but the resulting header was ruled out for offside against Matamando Mwatchipitsa.
Maule came closest to opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Clever Kalambo connected with an excellent low cross from captain Blessings Mpokera, only to see his close-range effort come back off the post with Mitolo beaten.
The hosts continued to enjoy promising attacking moments, with Billiat repeatedly causing problems down the flank through deliveries into the penalty area.
Red Lions, however, continued to pose a threat from set-pieces and almost created an opening midway through the half through Mwatchipitsa, whose free-kick effort struck the wall before the rebound sailed over the crossbar.
Chilipa later produced an important defensive intervention before Nyasulu reacted well to deny the visitors from a delivery into the box.
Deadlock Remains At Half-Time
Bullets earned the first corner of the match in the 38th minute, but Kalambo’s delivery was well defended by the visitors.
The final stages of the opening half remained closely contested with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities in the final third.
After two minutes of added time, the two sides headed into the break locked at 0-0.
Chirwa Reshuffles After The Restart
Chirwa responded at the start of the second half with a triple substitution as Chawanangwa Gumbo, Madalitso Safuli and Yamikani Mologeni replaced Peter Banda, Billiat and Paul Master.
The visitors continued to threaten from dead-ball situations early in the second half, but Andrew Jovinala dealt well with a dangerous free-kick delivery into the penalty area.
Safuli nearly made an immediate impact in the 56th minute when his long-range effort forced Mitolo to concede a corner before Ephraim Kondowe headed over the bar from the resulting set-piece.
Nyasulu then produced one of the defining moments of the afternoon after reacting brilliantly to deny Calisto Kaliwo from close range.
Bullets immediately launched a quick counter-attack at the other end where Mitolo also produced an excellent save inside the six-yard box to stop Dastan Banda, with both goalkeepers briefly requiring medical attention following the sequence.
Late Push Falls Short
Bullets increased the pressure in the closing stages as the hosts searched for a breakthrough while Red Lions remained compact defensively.
Dastan Banda later found himself through on goal after being released by Safuli, but Mitolo rushed out and stopped the forward outside the penalty area before receiving a yellow card.
George Chaomba was introduced in place of Kalambo during the closing minutes as Bullets pushed for a late winner.
Bullets earned another dangerous free-kick in the 85th minute, but Mologeni’s delivery eventually resulted in a corner that was well defended by the visitors.
Five minutes of added time were played at the end of the match, but Maule were ultimately left frustrated as Red Lions held firm to claim a share of the points.
The result moves Bullets onto eight points from four matches, with Maule dropping to fourth position in the FDH Bank Premiership standings.
Silver Strikers moved to the top of the table after a 3-0 victory over Masters FC on Sunday, dislodging Peter Mponda’s side, while Blue Eagles climbed to second following a 2-0 win over struggling Goshen City Dedza Dynamos.
