Phiri earns Goalkeeper of the Tournament in Lusaka

Hopeson Phiri was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after helping FCB Nyasa Big Bullets secure a third-place finish at the Kafue Celtic Under-17 Tournament in Lusaka.

The 16-year-old received the individual accolade after helping Bullets secure a third-place finish at a tournament that brought together some of the region’s promising young talents from Malawi and Zambia.

Phiri impressed with a series of assured displays between the posts, producing important saves and demonstrating composure whenever called upon.

He was particularly influential in Sunday’s third-place playoff against fellow Malawian side Ascent Academy, making several key interventions as Bullets secured a 2-1 victory to finish their campaign on a positive note.

The goalkeeper was especially important during the closing stages of the match as Bullets defended their lead after being reduced to 10 players following Francis Alfazema’s first-half dismissal.

The award capped an encouraging tournament for the youngster, whose performances earned recognition from the organisers as the competition’s outstanding goalkeeper.

Reacting to the recognition, Phiri described the award as a major source of motivation and highlighted the valuable lessons the team gained from the tournament.

“I am delighted to have won this award. It was my first time travelling to an international tournament and being recognised as Goalkeeper of the Tournament means a lot to me. It is a huge motivation and gives me even more belief to keep working hard and improving my game,” said the youngster.

“Beyond the award itself, this tournament has been a great learning experience for all of us. We have faced different opponents, learnt new things and gained valuable experience that will help us as we continue to develop as players.”

“I would like to thank coach Simeon Kapuza for the work he continues to do with us as goalkeepers.”

“I am also grateful to coach Fodya, my teammates and everyone involved because this recognition is not just for me—it belongs to the whole team.”

Beyond the results, the tournament offered valuable exposure for the young Maule, who had the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of scouts from Europe.

The scouting panel, which included former footballer and now player agent Frédéric Kanouté, was responsible for selecting the tournament’s outstanding performers, with Phiri’s displays earning him the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade.

Bullets finished the tournament in third place after recording one win, one draw and two defeats during their stay in Lusaka.

Phiri was one of three individuals recognised at the conclusion of the tournament.

Ascent Academy captain Razak Mahmood was named Player of the Tournament despite his side finishing bottom of the four-team competition, while Kafue Celtic forward Caleb Musonda claimed the Top Goal Scorer award after helping the hosts defeat Zambia Select in the final to lift the trophy.

The recognition represents another important milestone in the young goalkeeper’s development journey as he continues to progress through the Bullets youth ranks.
