Mpokera’s versatility impresses Nyirenda

The Bullets head coach says Mpokera has the qualities to excel in both defence and midfield after being asked whether the club captain could return to his natural position.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda believes Mpokera’s versatility gives the team valuable tactical options after sharing his thoughts on the club captain’s best position.

The Bullets boss addressed the subject during Thursday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s FDH Bank Premiership fixture against Masters FC at Mpira Stadium after being asked whether he would consider returning Mpokera to the holding midfield role where he began his career.

Before breaking into the senior team, Mpokera operated as a holding midfielder for Bullets’ youth and reserve sides. Following his promotion to the first team during the 2020/21 campaign, however, former head coach Kalisto Pasuwa converted him into a defender.

The switch proved to be a defining moment in his career.

Mpokera made his senior debut on 4 April 2021 in Bullets’ 3-0 TNM Super League victory over Mzuzu Warriors at Kamuzu Stadium and has since established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet, excelling at both centre-back and wing-back.

His influence has continued to grow and, in April this year, he was appointed first-team captain, underlining his importance both on and off the pitch.

While acknowledging the qualities that first made Mpokera a midfielder, Nyirenda believes the Bullets skipper possesses all the attributes required to excel in both roles.

“I have seen a great player in Blessings Mpokera,” said the head coach.

“I was discussing him with Heston Munthali and Zicco Mkanda just yesterday. I believe he can also play as a holding midfielder because he is comfortable on the ball, wins challenges and distributes well.

“If we strengthen central defence, then he is someone who could move into midfield because he has the qualities to perform both roles.”

The former Zambia international and Kaizer Chiefs forward believes versatility is a valuable asset, giving Bullets greater tactical flexibility as he continues to shape his squad.
