FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to FDH Bank Premiership action on Sunday when we welcome Blue Eagles to Mpira Stadium for the opening fixture of the second round.
The Area 30 side arrive in Blantyre leading the standings with 31 points from 15 matches, one ahead of The People’s Team after finishing the first round with a 2-1 victory over Mighty Wanderers.
Ahead of Sunday’s encounter, we take a closer look at our opponents’ recent record against Bullets, first-round form, style of play and some of the players who could have an influence at Mpira Stadium.
Recent History
Meetings between Bullets and Blue Eagles have produced some tightly contested encounters in recent seasons, with little separating the sides.
The reverse fixture at Civo Stadium ended 1-1 after Tonic Viyuyi put Eagles ahead before Ephraim Kondowe restored parity for Bullets.
Across the last eight league meetings, Bullets have won twice, Eagles once, while five encounters have ended in draws.
Blue Eagles’ most recent league victory over The People’s Team came during the 2025 campaign when they edged us 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium.
Our last league win in this fixture was a commanding 3-0 victory at the same venue in 2023.
Bullets therefore head into Sunday’s meeting looking for a first league victory over the Area 30 side in four encounters.
Current Form
Blue Eagles completed the first round at the summit after collecting 31 points from 15 matches, recording 10 wins, one draw and four defeats.
Declerk Msakakuona’s side scored 24 goals and conceded 16 during the opening half of the campaign.
They began with a 2-1 victory over Ekhaya FC before suffering their first defeat in a 1-0 loss away to Chitipa United.
Eagles responded with successive wins, beating Silver Strikers 1-0 through Bennet Konyo’s first-half strike before overcoming Goshen City Dedza Dynamos 2-0, with Micium Mhone and Stasha Chibala on target.
Their next assignment brought the first meeting with Bullets at Civo Stadium, where Viyuyi opened the scoring before Kondowe equalised in a 1-1 draw.
A 2-1 defeat to Civil Service United followed before Eagles returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory away to MAFCO and then edged Red Lions 3-2.
Kamuzu Barracks halted that run with a 2-1 defeat before Msakakuona’s men responded by beating Moyale Barracks 1-0.
They then went down 3-2 to Luanar Mitundu, but that setback was followed by an impressive finish to the first round.
Eagles beat Karonga United 3-2 and Creck Sporting Club 2-0 before recording successive 2-1 victories over Masters FC and Mighty Wanderers.
The win over Wanderers moved them onto 31 points and above Bullets at the summit heading into the midseason break.
Blue Eagles will, however, begin the second round without three members of their squad through suspension.
Tonic Viyuyi, Micium Mhone and Geoffrey Maluwa are all ruled out of Sunday’s encounter after being suspended for Matchweek 16.
The absence of Viyuyi is particularly significant, with the forward leading Eagles’ scoring charts on eight league goals, one behind Kondowe, while he also found the net against Bullets in the reverse fixture.
Mhone’s suspension removes another experienced attacking option from Msakakuona’s selection as Eagles prepare for the second half of the campaign.
Style of Play
Blue Eagles generally favour a direct and energetic approach, looking to progress quickly through the thirds rather than relying heavily on prolonged build-up from deep.
When possession is won, they are comfortable moving the ball forward early and using the movement of their attacking players to exploit space.
Gilbert Chirwa is influential in that process from midfield, with his distribution and ability to switch play helping Eagles move quickly from defence into attack.
Konyo and Pius Saka provide energy and movement further forward, while Fahad Mtcheka offers a commanding presence at the back, particularly when dealing with aerial balls into the penalty area.
In goal, Precious Masamba has established himself as a reliable presence following Joshua Waka’s move to Ekhaya FC.
The young goalkeeper has impressed with his handling, shot-stopping and confidence with the ball at his feet, providing assurance behind the Eagles defence.
Key Players
Bennet Konyo
Konyo has delivered several important moments for Blue Eagles this season, including the winning goal against Silver Strikers during the first round.
His movement, pressing and physical presence make him difficult to contain in attacking areas, while his willingness to make forward runs gives Eagles another outlet when they break at pace.
With Viyuyi unavailable through suspension, Konyo could carry greater responsibility in the final third on Sunday.
Fahad Mtcheka
Mtcheka has been one of the pillars of the Blue Eagles defence, producing commanding performances in some of their biggest matches of the campaign.
The defender was named Player of the Match against Mighty Wanderers in their final fixture of the first round and also found the net in the 2-1 victory.
Strong in the air, Mtcheka is authoritative when dealing with crosses and direct balls into the box and is difficult to beat in individual duels.
He is also comfortable tracking an opponent closely, restricting space and disrupting the supply into dangerous areas.
His presence at the heart of the Eagles defence will be important against a Bullets attack that scored five goals in its final league outing before the break.
Gilbert Chirwa
The experienced midfielder has regularly been an influential figure when Blue Eagles face Bullets.
Chirwa provides control in central areas through his positioning, distribution and ability to retain possession under pressure.
He can carry the ball through midfield, switch play and release the front line quickly when Eagles transition from defence into attack.
His ability to dictate the tempo and connect midfield with the forwards makes him an important part of how Msakakuona’s side operate.
Blue Eagles arrive at Mpira Stadium with a one-point advantage at the top and four consecutive league victories behind them.
For Bullets, Sunday presents an opportunity to end a three-match winless league run against the Area 30 side and move above them as the second round gets underway.
