Report: Bullets U19 fire five past Airspot after break

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Under-19 concluded the first round of the FCB Katswiri U19 League with a commanding 5-0 victory over Airspot FC at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday morning, with all five goals coming after the break.

A goalless opening half gave way to an impressive attacking display as Yamikani Fodya’s side struck four times in just six minutes before adding a fifth in stoppage time.

Osman George scored twice, while Hassan Madula, Ahmad Ayami and substitute Mike Kalanda were also on target as the young Bullets took their tally to 13 goals in their last three matches.

First-Half Chances Go Unrewarded

Airspot threatened first, winning a corner in the fourth minute after Waseem Samba’s effort was deflected behind, but the resulting opportunity failed to trouble the Bullets defence.

The hosts gradually settled into the contest, producing a promising attacking move in the 14th minute as they began to find their rhythm.

Fodya made an early change four minutes later, introducing Gomezgani Maziya for Blessings Masamba.

Airspot nearly capitalised on a defensive lapse in the 19th minute when Rafick Saidi found himself with an open goal, but he fired over the crossbar.

Bullets responded three minutes later after Madula was brought down, earning a free-kick that Prince Jamali directed straight at goalkeeper Thoko Sembeleka.

The young Bullets created another opening in the 25th minute when Maziya picked out George, who released Misheck Bekka, but the attacker failed to make the opportunity count.

Jamali delivered a corner a minute later, but the resulting header sailed over the crossbar.

Airspot made a double substitution in the 28th minute, introducing Denis Sapanga and Emmanuel Zebio for Sankhani Chirwa and Yassin Mangani, respectively.

Bullets came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute when Madula delivered an inviting cross into the box for Blessings Lungu, whose effort crashed against the crossbar before going out for a goal kick.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Lungu combining with Bekka from a short corner in the 37th minute before firing over.

A minute later, Bekka picked out Lungu’s run, but his effort was deflected behind for another corner.

Lungu delivered the resulting set-piece for Ayami, whose attempt went narrowly wide.

Jamali had another opportunity from a free-kick in the 40th minute, but his effort drifted off target as the two sides went into the break level at 0-0.

Four Goals in Six Minutes Transform the Contest

Fodya made two changes at the start of the second half, introducing Dickson Kameza and Mike Kalanda for Bekka and Kelvin Phiri, respectively.

Kameza quickly made his presence felt, driving forward in the 45th minute and forcing Sembeleka into a save as Bullets resumed their search for the opening goal.

The tempo briefly dropped, with neither side creating clear opportunities as the second half progressed.

Airspot made two further substitutions in the 53rd minute, bringing on Praise Zamadenga and Pemphero Malamba for Emmanuel Mathimba and Saidi.

Five minutes later, Bullets finally broke the deadlock.

George initiated the move by spotting Kameza’s run down the left flank. The substitute delivered a well-placed cross into the box, where Madula connected to fire home and give the hosts the lead.

The breakthrough sparked a remarkable six-minute spell that transformed the contest.

In the 60th minute, Madula came close to doubling the advantage when his effort struck the post, but Kalanda reacted quickly to recover the loose ball.

The substitute then set up Ayami, who calmly slotted into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Bullets struck again two minutes later when Kalanda broke through the Airspot defence and created an opening for George, who finished to extend the lead.

The young Bullets maintained their attacking momentum, and Kalanda added his name to the scoresheet in the 64th minute to make it 4-0.

It completed an outstanding sequence in which Fodya’s men scored four unanswered goals between the 58th and 64th minutes, putting the contest firmly beyond the visitors.

With Bullets in control, Fodya introduced Esau Kumwenda and Hopeson Nkhata for Lungu and Madula in the 69th minute.

Kalanda delivered another corner two minutes later, but the hosts were unable to apply the finishing touch.

Kumwenda almost added a fifth in the 74th minute, finding space in attack before sending his effort wide.

Bullets continued to press in the closing stages and were rewarded three minutes into stoppage time.

Jamali picked out George, who finished to complete his brace and seal a comprehensive five-goal victory.

Airspot’s difficulties were compounded a minute later when Louis Jacob received a straight red card following a foul on Kumwenda, leaving the visitors to finish the contest with ten players.

The final whistle confirmed a convincing conclusion to the first round for Fodya’s side, who turned a closely contested opening half into a commanding victory.

The result saw Bullets U19s finish the first round in second place with 31 points from 14 matches, two behind leaders Ekhaya Youth, who have played a game fewer.

Third-placed Wanderers Youth have 28 points from 12 matches, with both Ekhaya and Wanderers scheduled to play on Sunday.

Fodya Impressed With Second-Half Response

Head coach Yamikani Fodya praised his players for responding to the tactical adjustments made at half-time, highlighting their improved attacking efficiency and the progress demonstrated over their last three matches.

“It was a tough game, regardless of the final scoreline. The first half ended goalless, and we knew we had to make some adjustments.

“During the break, we spoke to the players and made a few tactical changes, which helped us take control of the game in the second half. We started creating more opportunities and managed to score four goals within six minutes, which was impressive.

“I am happy that we have finished the first round of the league with a victory, scoring five goals in this game and 13 goals in our last three matches. That shows the progress the boys are making, and I am impressed with their overall performance and commitment.”

Despite the encouraging results, Fodya stressed the importance of maintaining that progress while addressing areas that still require improvement ahead of the second round.

“However, we are not getting carried away by these results because there is still a lot of work to be done.

“The break gives us an opportunity to identify areas where we need to improve, particularly in our consistency, finishing and overall team organisation. We will use this period to work hard, correct our mistakes and prepare ourselves to come back stronger for the second round of the league.

“The most important thing is to maintain this momentum, continue developing the players and ensure that we remain competitive as we push towards our targets for the season.”
