Malawi’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign came to an end on Monday afternoon following a 1-0 defeat to São Tomé and Príncipe in Tunis, with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets duo Babatunde Adepoju and Yankho Singo both featuring in the Flames’ final Group H fixture.
The result means the Flames’ World Cup dreams are over despite a spirited display under head coach Kalisto Pasuwa, who handed both Bullets players starting roles.
It was Babatunde’s Flames debut after the Nigerian-born forward was granted Malawian citizenship last month. He showed his strength, pressing and movement in attack, while Yankho Singo anchored the midfield with composure as Malawi dominated possession in the opening stages.
After creating several chances in the first half, Malawi fell behind in the 61st minute when Ronaldo Afonso converted from the penalty spot following a foul in the area.
The Flames pushed for a response through Baba and Mayele Malango after coming on from the bench, but they couldn’t find a way past goalkeeper Yaniel Bonfim, who stood firm for the island nation.
The defeat marked the end of Malawi’s World Cup qualification journey, but it was another proud moment for The People’s Team, with Babatunde earning his first international cap and Singo continuing to impress in midfield.
