Eighteen-year-old defender Edward Thengo took a huge step in his football journey on Saturday evening as he made his senior competitive debut for FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the Airtel Top 8 Cup semifinal against Karonga United.
The young right-back featured as The People’s Team booked a spot in the final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Chikumbutso Salima and Hassan Kajoke.
Thengo’s story is one of steady rise and resilience. He began at Balaka Town Hammers before joining the Football Association of Malawi’s FIFA-funded Talent Development Scheme in 2022. His potential stood out, earning him a place in the Bullets Reserves setup in 2023.
After an impressive spell with the juniors, he caught the eye of head coach Peter Mponda, who promoted him to the senior squad during the 2025 pre-season. He featured in several warm-up matches ahead of the new campaign.
On 7 June, he was in the starting XI as we defeated Moyale Barracks 2-0 in a friendly match during the international break, further underlining his growing involvement with the first team toward his big break.
That moment finally came on Saturday night under the lights at Bingu National Stadium. Thengo was introduced in the 73rd minute, replacing Henry Chiwaya as the technical panel adjusted the shape. Fellow substitute Yamikani Mologeni switched to the left wingback role, allowing the debutant to take charge on the right.
Speaking after the match, Thengo couldn’t hide his emotions:
“This was a dream come true for me — my very first competitive game at senior level!” he said. “I’m so thankful to the coaches for trusting me and giving me this opportunity to represent Bullets. Now it’s up to me to keep working hard, stay focused, and deliver on everything we’re taught in training.”
He also acknowledged those who helped him along the way:
“I want to thank FAM for the amazing support through the Talent Development Scheme, and my manager as well — without them, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Thengo’s debut is yet another shining example of the success of Bullets’ player development pathway — proving that talent, when nurtured, rises to the top.
