Full squad boost for Bullets ahead of FDH Cup semifinal

As The People’s Team prepare for another Blantyre Derby against Mighty Wanderers in the FDH Bank Cup semifinal at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday, head coach Peter Mponda has been handed a major boost with the return of midfielder Yankho Singo, who is back in contention after recovering from injury.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Mponda confirmed that Singo has been training well and could be part of the match-day squad for the highly anticipated semifinal clash.

“He’s looking good at training. We know he’s coming from an injury, but the way he’s training, he’s in contention,” said Mponda.

“That said, we’ll have to wait until Saturday, but he’s looking good and showing the right attitude.”

Singo pulled a muscle during the FDH Bank Cup quarterfinal victory over Kamuzu Barracks on 18 October, which forced him to miss the TNM Super League fixtures against Mafco and Wanderers. His potential return on Sunday would be a timely boost for Bullets as they look to reassert dominance in midfield.

The 25-year-old has been one of Bullets’ most consistent performers this season, admired for his composure, ball recovery, and ability to link play between defence and attack. His return would add both energy and balance to Mponda’s setup as the team aims for a spot in the final.

The Bullets coach also expressed satisfaction with the overall energy and response from his squad following last Sunday’s 3-0 league defeat, describing the week’s training sessions at Blantyre Sports Club as intense and purposeful.

“The reaction has been good. The boys have trained with hunger and focus. Everyone knows what’s at stake, and the competition for places is very high,” Mponda added.

With Mponda now assured of Singo’s availability, Bullets will have the entire squad available for selection for Sunday’s clash against the blue side of Blantyre.

The FDH Bank Cup semifinal kicks off at 14:30 on Sunday, 2 November, with the winner advancing to the final set for 9 November at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
