Mponda’s pre-Blantyre derby press conference

On Thursday, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Peter Mponda spoke to the press ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Blantyre derby.

Bullets will travel to Kamuzu Stadium to face Mighty Wanderers on Saturday, marking the 78th league encounter between these fierce rivals in Malawian football.

During the briefing, the head coach shared insights on the team’s preparations, the significance of the derby for the championship race as well as his early substitutions, among other issues.

Here is the complete transcript of Mponda’s media conference:

Regarding Bullets’ preparedness

Our preparations are going smoothly ahead of the game. With one day left before the match, we are generally pleased with our progress. All players who have been training with us are fit and available for selection, and I am satisfied with what I am seeing during the training sessions.

On maintaining a flawless record against Wanderers

We have undoubtedly been dominant, especially in cup competitions. Nevertheless, upon reviewing our league record over the past ten games, it becomes clear that we have only emerged victorious twice. In contrast, they have secured one win, with seven matches ending in draws. This underscores that our encounters have consistently been closely contested, with our goal tally of nine marginally surpassing their total of eight. Therefore, I anticipate another closely fought game.

On whether derby hype increases pressure on teams

While you may perceive it as an extraordinary game, I respectfully disagree. In my view, it is simply an ordinary game characterized by heightened excitement and increased attendance, with the stakes remaining unchanged—three points. We will endeavour to perform optimally and execute our gameplay as we have in previous matches against Karonga United, Silver Strikers, and other opponents, without altering our standard preparation.

On maintaining a 100 percent start to the new campaign

Clearly, we’re heading into this game with a 100 percent record, but our opponents have only dropped two points, which makes it a tight game. We’ve demonstrated defensive resilience while also showcasing our attacking prowess, scoring goals, and achieving a balance between defence and attack. Nevertheless, it’s a derby, and these games are typically closely contested, often decided by a single mistake. We must also consider Wanderers’ recent performances, as they’ve shown notable improvement.

On whether the derby will decide this season’s championship race

It’s premature, given that we’ve only played a handful of games and haven’t yet reached the halfway mark. As I stated last week, Wanderers and Silver Strikers remain favourites for the title. Wanderers’ retention of their core players and coaching staff, along with strategic investments in quality new players, has reinforced their team, solidifying their position as favourites.

On the halftime changes made against Kamuzu Barracks last Saturday

I noted that the players had fulfilled their responsibilities effectively within the opening 30 minutes and required a rest. This decision was not driven by tactical considerations but rather served as a demonstration of our faith in every player we acquire. Having assembled a squad of 30 players, we are confident that each individual possesses the ability to make a meaningful impact on any given day.

Regarding his expeditious substitutions

I think it is more prudent to exhaust our substitution options rather than jeopardize the outcome of the game. If our initial approach does not yield the desired results, I do not delay in making adjustments. In light of the significance attributed to this particular match, it is crucial to adopt a strategic, risk-taking approach to ensure a favourable outcome.

On deploying right-footed players as left-backs and Dominic Musonda’s readiness

Dominic Musonda has returned, but he is not yet fully fit to be considered because he has staying long without playing, once he is ready, the fans will see him on the pitch. Regarding the use of a non-left-back player as a left-back, it is not a sign of struggle, given our concession of only one goal. Our defensive performance has been robust. While we have not yet achieved our desired level, our defensive capabilities have been commendable.

On what he is telling players before the derby

Games like these can either make or break a player. A strong performance can generate significant attention for a player. As I previously stated, this is an ordinary game where three points are at stake, with no pressure. I avoid putting pressure on my players, recognizing that we can still draw or lose this game and yet win the league. The outcome of this championship race is not solely dependent on this game.
