FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will host Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium this Sunday in the Castel Challenge Cup semifinal, with a place in the final on the line.
After missing out on the TNM Super League and FDH Bank Cup, Bullets are looking to respond with a strong performance and continue their push for another trophy this season, following their Airtel Top 8 win in July.
Hammers reached this stage by defeating top teams, but The People’s Team is focused on controlling the game in front of home fans and securing a place in the final.
The visitors have earned a reputation as giant killers, having knocked out Silver Strikers, the 2024 TNM Super League champions, and Mighty Wanderers, the 2025 league champions.
Last season, Hammers also ended Bullets’ Castel Challenge Cup run at this stage, underlining the challenge ahead. For Gilbert Chirwa’s men to progress, they will need a disciplined and high-level performance against a confident and spirited opponent.
FORM GUIDE
Maule have carried strong momentum into the Castel Challenge Cup, winning all three matches to reach the semifinals.
Bullets opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium in the Round of 32. They followed that with a 3-1 win against Ndirande Stars in the Round of 16.
A 2-0 win over Mighty Tigers in the quarterfinals secured their place in the semifinal for the third consecutive year.
Hammers, meanwhile, began with a 5-2 win over Home Sweepers. They came from behind to defeat Silver Strikers 2-1 in the Round of 16 and then drew 1-1 with Mighty Wanderers in the quarterfinals before advancing 5-3 on penalties.
Their run demonstrates resilience and the ability to challenge top sides. This Sunday will be their first trip away after playing the first three matches at Rumphi Stadium.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be the third meeting between Bullets and Hammers in the Castel Challenge Cup and the second at the semifinal stage.
Bullets beat Hammers 4-0 in the 2023 quarterfinals, while last season Hammers eliminated the then title holders on penalties after a goalless draw at Kamuzu Stadium.
Sunday offers Bullets the chance to take control from the first whistle and advance to the final.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
In his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Chirwa said the boys are focused and ready for the challenge:
“A semifinal against Mzuzu City Hammers will be tough, but we are ready for the challenge. The boys know not to underrate them because cup games are always difficult. We beat them 4–0 in the league, and it’s the same team, so I’m confident we can put on a strong performance and have a good game on Sunday.”
TEAM NEWS
Aaron Chilipa is unavailable due to fitness concerns, while Chrispin Mapemba continues his rehabilitation. The rest of the squad is fit and ready for selection.
