Bullets target second place in the Super League closing fixture against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium.

Match Preview: Bullets target second spot in league closing fixture

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets conclude their 2025 TNM Super League campaign with a home clash against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

Although rivals Mighty Wanderers secured the championship last week, The People’s Team still have a second-place battle to fight with Silver Strikers, who moved joint second following a convincing 3-0 win over Saturday’s opponents.

A strong performance against Hammers, coupled with a superior goal difference, could see Maule finish second in the table above the Central Bankers. However, victory will not come easily, as the Mzuzu-based side will be desperate for a last-minute miracle to avoid relegation.

FORM GUIDE

Bullets have produced mixed results in their last three league games. A 2-0 loss away to Moyale Barracks saw the team surrender the top spot.

Back in Blantyre, Bullets secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Ekhaya FC, keeping top-two hopes alive.

A goalless draw with Mighty Tigers last Saturday confirmed Wanderers’ league success to end the Nomads’ eight-year title drought.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Bullets remain unbeaten against Mzuzu City Hammers in league play, regardless of venue. The first-round clash ended in a 2-0 win at Rumphi Stadium, thanks to late strikes from Chikumbutso Salima and Hassan Kajoke.

In the last ten league meetings, Maule have won eight. In last season’s Castel Challenge Cup, Hammers edged Bullets 4-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Kamuzu Stadium. The only recent league draws against The People’s Team came at Hammers’ home ground in 2023 and 2024.

COACH’S THOUGHTS

Interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa, who took charge on Sunday following the departure of Peter Mponda, has emphasised the importance of finishing the campaign strongly, urging his players to remain focused despite the disappointment of missing out on the league title.

He highlighted the need for professionalism and intensity, noting that securing second place would be a fitting way to close the season while also laying a strong foundation for upcoming cup commitments. Chirwa believes his men can rise to the occasion.

“With one game remaining, we have to work very hard to win because it is very important. Silver Strikers are also pushing for the number two position. We need to have a proper game plan for [Mzuzu City]. It will be a very difficult match, but with the right approach, I believe we can carry the day.”

TEAM NEWS

For Bullets, Yankho Singo is suspended and will return for the Castel Challenge Cup Round 32 tie against Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium in January.

Injuries rule out Blessings Mpokera, Aaron Chilipa, Chrispin Mapemba, Mike Mkwate, and Andrew Jovinala, though most are expected back for the Songwe clash.

Babatunde Adepoju is available after missing last week’s fixture against Mighty Tigers.

Mzuzu City Hammers are fighting for survival, sitting 14th with 28 points from 29 games following a 3-0 loss to Silver Strikers midweek. They trail Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, 13th with 31 points in the relegation battle, with Songwe and Mighty Tigers already relegated.
