Mponda provides update on Clever Mkungula

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Peter Mponda has provided an update on goalkeeper Clever Mkungula, who has not featured with the squad for over a month.

The 27-year-old was last part of the team that travelled to Lilongwe for the Airtel Top 8 Final against Silver Strikers on 20 July. He last played in the FCB @30 celebratory match against the same opponents at the Bingu National Stadium on 29 June.

Mkungula, who joined Bullets via the Reserves in 2018 and was promoted to the first team in 2022, signed a new two-year contract in January and has made 35 senior appearances.

Despite not featuring this season, the shotstopper remains a valued member of the squad, and Mponda revealed that he recently met with the player to reaffirm his importance.

“He had some personal challenges, but we sat down and talked through everything. I gave him a guarantee that he is a very important player for the team,” Mponda said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“Yes, there’s strong competition in the squad, especially in the goalkeeping department, but it’s up to every player to fight for their place. I love working with Clever, and we believe he can contribute.”

Mkungula is part of a competitive goalkeeping unit that includes Innocent Nyasulu—who has started most matches this season—alongside Richard Chimbamba and Austin Chirambo, a recent graduate from Bullets Reserves.

As The People’s Team return to TNM Super League action this weekend against Dedza Dynamos at Kamuzu Stadium, Mkungula continues working his way back into the fold.
