FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves head coach Heston Munthali has shared his full thoughts on Saturday’s 1–1 draw with ThumbsUp SRFL leaders Chilobwe United, touching on the performance, the tense finish, and the team’s preparations for their next assignment.
It was a match played with intensity and discipline, with Bullets showing character and resilience throughout the 90 minutes.
The young Maule took the lead through Hadji Steven’s 73rd-minute header, but a late penalty in a highly tense ending saw the hosts level deep into stoppage time at Moneymen Ground.
Second-Half Improvement Encourages Munthali
Munthali acknowledged that his side had a difficult first half but praised the strong reaction after the break.
“We had a solid plan, and it worked well overall,” he said. “In the first half we struggled to create chances and were second to most balls, but after making some changes at halftime, the boys responded very well.
We started attacking more effectively, created opportunities, and eventually scored our goal.”
He highlighted the team’s fighting spirit, discipline, and growing understanding of the tactical demands placed on them.
Managing Emotions After Late Equaliser
Although the late penalty changed the outcome of the match, Munthali chose to remain focused on his team’s overall performance rather than the individual moment.
The match featured an unusually long period of stoppage time, with the referee adding ten minutes, creating a demanding and emotional ending as Bullets worked to protect their narrow lead.
“There were moments that didn’t go our way, especially towards the end, but these things happen in football,” he noted.
“What matters is how the boys handled themselves. They stayed focused, kept playing, and showed good discipline even after conceding late.”
Munthali stressed that such moments form part of the development curve for a young squad.
“As coaches, we guide them through both the positive moments and the challenging moments. The boys are improving, and we are pleased with the progress they’re making.”
Attention Turns to Ntopwa Fixture
With another important match only days away, Munthali says the team’s focus now shifts to preparing for Thursday’s home tie against Ntopwa at Kamuzu Stadium.
“We will take this result, move forward, and focus on our next match,” he said. “The boys are applying what we teach them in training, and we will continue working hard as a group.”
Thursday’s fixture offers a timely chance for the Reserves to respond and regain momentum as the title race intensifies.
